The Peer Tutor is a student part-time staff position that is recruited directly from students enrolled at College of Eastern Idaho and supports classes they have previously taken at CEI as a student. Peer tutors provide subject-area knowledge, review class material, and work on solutions to problems with assigned students. Peer Tutors will primarily support the subjects they are hired to tutor, but may have to do administrative tasks such as facilitating when required to do so.
Students that have never taken classes at CEI can also become a Peer Tutor, but they would have to have taken a class that is the equivalent to the class they will be supporting. The candidate will need an instructor referral from their previous institution or the Tutoring Center receives permission from the instructor currently teaching the class at CEI to support their class.
The position will primarily be staffed on campus at the College of Eastern Idaho, but there may be times when the incumbent will be required to tutor students online over Zoom.
Typical Job Functions
Provide academic support to CEI students by:
Provides educational assistance to students in subjects eligible to tutor, including the methods of studying and improving understanding and comprehension of subject matter content
May collaborate with faculty to provide embedded tutoring support in specific, designated courses
Works well in a team environment and may be required to take on a peer leadership position in the tutoring center when requested to do so
Hold scheduled appointments in-person at the tutoring space or online over Zoom
Prepare for tutoring sessions by reviewing relevant material
Meets and communicates with students in-person and via e-mail, canvas and other online platforms
Contributes to the preparation of workshops and materials that will enhance student understanding of coursework
Demonstrates professionalism, confidentiality, and communication skills in accordance with policies and procedures.
When required, tutor students in subjects you are qualified to tutor but is not on your Drop-In list of courses you primarily support
Ability to communicate knowledge of course content in a way that is meaningful to students
Ability to adapt to a variety of students with a wide range of abilities and diverse learning styles
Ability to demonstrate verbal and written command of the English language
Ability to attend and participate in monthly trainings and/or meetings. There will be a mandatory training the week before each semester begins
Proficient in computer usage and word processing, database and spreadsheet programs
Assist the Senior Tutoring Coordinator with administrative tasks as needed
Performs other duties as required or assigned by the Senior Tutoring Coordinator
Establish and maintain program requirements by:
Attend all mandatory trainings required for all student staff
Timely and complete submission of required paperwork for payroll and record-keeping (Web-time entry, verification forms)
Maintain confidentiality with students and uphold FERPA guidelines while working
Assist with certifications for the tutoring program and help complete all requirements related to the tutoring certification program
Timely and complete submission of support documentation
Contribute to team effort by:
Professional conduct in a manner that is a representative of Falcons Tutoring and the College of Eastern Idaho
Performing related tasks and other duties as assigned by Senior Tutoring Coordinator
Keep updated office hours in Microsoft Outlook, contribute to student success outcomes and update profile
Checking emails daily and managing an Outlook calendar throughout the semester
Minimum Qualifications
Currently taking courses at the College of Eastern Idaho or from an accredited 2-year or 4-year college or university
Grade of A or B in the course being tutored OR documented work or educational experience equivalent to a grade of A or B in the course being tutored
Incumbent must reside in Idaho (Currently CEI doesn't sponsor H-1B Visas)
Additional Desired Qualifications
Course work in the same subject areas and above the level of courses being tutored
Previous experience tutoring or in related work
Has taken the same College of Eastern Idaho class or equivalent class that is offered for tutoring to student; the class does not have to be taught by the same professor
Bilingual (Spanish)
Physical Demands and Work Environment: Employees work indoors and are protected from weather and/or contaminants, but not, necessarily, occasional temperature changes. The employee is regularly required to sit and often uses repetitive hand motions.
Background Investigations: Employment at College of Eastern Idaho will be contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background investigation and may require a credit and/or motor vehicle background investigation depending on the position. Please refer to Policy 225: Background Checks.
