About the position

The Director of Underwriting Research at USAA is responsible for managing a team of insurance professionals to plan, develop, and administer Property and Casualty (P&C) Auto Underwriting Strategic Programs. This role focuses on creating new strategic programs and capabilities that align with corporate and operational performance objectives, ensuring compliance with regulations while enhancing operational efficiency and competitiveness.

Responsibilities
• Directs the identification, analysis, development, and implementation of complex initiatives for underwriting policies and processes.

• Oversees the development, maintenance, and optimization of existing processes and systems to comply with legal and company requirements.
,
• Manages the identification and implementation of opportunities to improve processes and systems for better member experience and operational efficiency.
,
• Directs oversight of P&C Underwriting supplier programs to enhance risk management and operational efficiency.
,
• Collaborates cross-functionally to implement P&C Underwriting requirements for new products and services.
,
• Stays updated on emerging technology and evaluates industry solutions for application to underwriting processes.
,
• Leads planning for complex processes including problem definition, evaluation of requirements, and implementation of business processes.
,
• Guides process re-engineering and technology implementation to enable innovation and improve performance.
,
• Builds and oversees a team through recruiting, development, retention, and performance management.
,
• Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified and controlled.

Requirements
• Bachelor's Degree or 4 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
,
• 8 years of experience in Property & Casualty, Project Management, Process Engineering, Business Process or Risk Management, with direct experience in underwriting processes.
,
• 3 years of direct team lead or management experience.
,
• Advanced knowledge of industry practices, trends, and regulatory requirements.
,
• Experience in reviewing policies and procedures to identify risks and opportunities.
,
• Proven skills in developing relationships with peers and stakeholders across the organization.
,
• Advanced experience in presenting analysis and findings to senior management.
,
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and/or Access.

Nice-to-haves
• Auto Underwriting, pricing, and/or product expertise.
,
• Experience with telematics and 3rd party auto data.
,
• Experience using predictive models in underwriting programs.
,
• Demonstrated experience leading large program efforts for change adoption.
