The Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology (MoECST) in Belize has requested the support of Peace Corps Response Volunteers (PCRVs) to serve as Special Education Instructional Coaches. The Belize Ministry of Education through the Special Education Unit (SEU) is responsible for providing education services to children and young persons with additional learning needs. The Ministry has requested support in expanding and improving special education programming in Belize to serve a vulnerable population of students with disabilities or special learning needs. SEU hopes to engage Special Education teachers as well as teachers of students with special needs in mainstream primary schools within the district in a staff development program.

Each PCRV will work with teachers and the officer in each District Education Center responsible for training and supporting teachers in Special Education in training regarding classroom strategies and instruction, curriculum review/modification, collecting and tracking developmental data for identified children with special needs; and any other needs identified from an analysis to be conducted with the help of the PCRV.

Candidates selected for this position will be arriving in Belize together as a group, so while the departure dates for the whole group could change, dates cannot be changed for individual candidates.

Required Skills
• Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education with Special Education component
• Special Education Certification
• Three years of experience working in a school setting with students with special needs
• Licensed teacher (active or inactive)
• Experience leading in-person and virtual professional development training/coaching to teachers and school leaders
• Excellent communication and problem solving skills
• High tolerance for ambiguity and high level of flexibility
