[Remote] AI Solutions Engineer

The AI Solutions Engineer will develop and maintain AI tools, ensuring their accuracy and effectiveness throughout their lifecycle while collaborating with various engineering specifications and data sets.ResponsibilitiesDevelop new AI tools from engineering specifications, working from prototype through productionImplement remediation directly: prompt tuning, training data curation, retrieval improvements, and model selectionMaintain and extend deployed AI tools through their lifecycle as requirements changeExecute tools against representative Merit data sets — tag maps, design packages, network schematics, RTAC configurations, Ignition UDTs, SCADA screens — and assess outputs for technical correctnessTranslate specifications and prototypes into validation and test plans aligned with Merit’s AI Tool Validation Standard; document results, failure modes, and remediationsMonitor deployed tools for performance drift and emerging failure modes; flag conditions requiring re-validationEvaluate emerging AI tools and platforms; lead proof-of-concept assessments and inform Merit’s AI tooling roadmapDeliver training and frontline support for deployed tools, and contribute to internal AI enablement through case studies, newsletter content, and demo sessionsSkills4-8 years of engineering experience in controls, automation, SCADA, power systems engineering, electrical engineering, or a comparable domain involving direct work with tag maps, PLC logic, HMI systems, electrical schematics, and/or IFC construction packagesProficiency reading and interpreting electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, specifications, and construction drawingsExperience developing software with AI-assisted tooling, and working familiarity with prompt engineering, RAG, or model evaluationExpertise in at least one of: DNP3, Modbus, Ignition, SEL RTAC, PSS/E or PSCAD, or Python for engineering applicationsHigh tolerance for detailed verification work; comfort confirming individual records within large data setsActive interest in AI development, grounded in engineering applicationsBachelor's Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or related fieldDemonstrated ability to work well in collaborative team environment and start-up atmosphereEnthusiasm for taking on new and challenging tasksStrong interest in renewable energy, energy storage and their applicationsExcellent analytical, quantitative, and interpersonal skillsAbility to multitask in a fast-paced, collaborative working environmentEntrepreneurial mindset and self-starterSense of humor and ability to build positive relationshipsAbility to stand and sit for 8 or more hours when in an office environmentAbility to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule formAbility to understand a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule formAbility to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessaryPower systems engineering background (substation design, generation, or utility-scale renewables)Hands-on experience building with LLMs — fine-tuning, retrieval pipelines, agent frameworks, or production model deploymentPython proficiency for tool development, including Hugging Face, LangChain, or similar librariesPrior test engineering experience in a technically demanding environmentExperience in a validation-regulated environment (pharmaceutical, nuclear, aerospace, or medical devices)Company OverviewMerit Controls provides grid integration products and services for utility power generation to EPCs, developers, and power plant owners.
