As an entry-level Operations Agent based at the bustling Chicago-Midway (MDW) base, you become the essential muscle behind every aircraft's quick turnaround. This role places you at the heart of ground operations, requiring speed, strength, and meticulous attention to safety to ensure the fastest and safest aircraft turns in the industry. Southwest Airlines offers world-class paid training to equip you with the skills needed for this physically demanding job, so no prior experience is required. You’ll be working directly 'below the wing' participating in critical tasks such as marshalling aircraft, loading and unloading baggage (some up to 70 lbs), and operating heavy ground support equipment.
This fast-paced job demands teamwork and resilience as you work outdoors in all weather conditions – enduring the summer heat or assisting with aircraft de-icing in the cold Chicago winters. Flexibility is essential because Southwest operates 24/7, including early mornings (starting as early as 4 AM), late nights (until 1 AM), weekends, and holidays. New employees typically start with night shifts and weekend schedules, a union-based system where shift bidding is seniority-driven. Overtime is commonly available for those wishing to increase their income and experience.
Beyond the physical demands, Southwest Airlines deeply invests in your development. Training includes classroom learning, on-the-job practice at MDW, and access to their state-of-the-art training facilities in Dallas, Texas. You will gain expertise in operating ground equipment ranging from belt loaders to pushback tugs while mastering ramp safety protocols.
