Principal Engineer

We are looking for a Principal Engineer with outstanding Python, JavaScript, and data engineering skills. Candidates must have proven technical expertise, mentorship abilities, and delivery excellence to lead complex technical initiatives and drive engineering excellence within our Engineering and QA teams as we build software solutions that facilitate the capture and analytics of critical healthcare data.As a Principal Engineer, you'll be responsible for the technical leadership, implementation, and optimization of a modern AI application leveraging LLMs. You will lead the development of Python backends with a variety of persistence stores, React browser applications for management, third party data integration, and automated testing frameworks. On a daily basis, the Principal Engineer will actively collaborate with geographically-dispersed, cross-functional teammates to solve complex technical challenges, mentor engineers, and deliver high-quality end-to-end software solutions in a timely fashion.Responsibilities:Lead complex technical initiatives and drive engineering excellence across the teamSolve the most challenging technical problems and provide technical guidance to other engineersWrite high-quality, scalable, and maintainable code using Python & ReactEstablish and enforce coding standards, best practices, and technical design patternsMentor junior and mid-level engineers, providing technical guidance and fostering growthConduct thorough code reviews and drive technical decision-makingCreate expressive, safe, and performant DSLs that structure and constrain LLM outputs, enabling safe integration with automated systems and multi-step toolchains.Investigate and implement cutting-edge technologies, building proofs of concept for future initiativesDrive technical innovation while maintaining focus on customer value and business impactCollaborate in roadmap planning and provide technical input on new and existing functionalityCreate technical documentation and share knowledge across the engineering organizationWork effectively with distributed remote teams, including pair programming and collaborative problem-solvingChampion engineering best practices and help build a culture of technical excellenceWhat you'll need:Expert-level proficiency in Python with deep understanding of language features and ecosystem7+ years of professional software development experience with a track record of technical leadership5+ years of experience building complex JavaScript applications using modern frameworks (React.js, Angular, Vue, Node.js)5+ years of experience designing and implementing database solutions (relational, document, etc.)Expert knowledge of modern Python toolset (build tools, packaging, testing frameworks) and DevOps/Platform Engineering tooling (git, gitops, docker, kubernetes, observability suites)Proven experience building and optimizing cloud microservices (AWS preferred)Deep experience with enterprise-grade, Internet-facing web applications including security, RESTful Web API design, performance optimization, test automation, event-driven architectures, and cloud native solutionsStrong experience with Agile/Lean development methodologiesDemonstrated ability to mentor and grow other engineersExperience working in fast-paced, high-growth environmentsBachelor's degree in computer science or related field, or equivalent experienceWhy we love Carta Healthcare, and why you will too!Working on a new, challenging problem space with LLMs/AI/HealthcareIndustry leading productsWork hard, and have fun doing itWork alongside some of the most talented and dedicated teammatesMission drivenCompetitive benefits package including great healthcare benefits and 401kAll applicants require legal authorization to work in the United States now or in the future without sponsorship.Salary Range: $170,000-200,000In compliance with federal law, all persons hired will be required to verify identity and eligibility to work in the United States and to complete the required employment eligibility verification form upon hire.
