About the position

The Mortgage Loan Underwriter I position is responsible for approving or denying first and/or second mortgage loans by analyzing loan applications and managing credit risk within real estate portfolios. The role requires interaction with management and external personnel on significant lending matters, and it necessitates previous experience in loan underwriting or as a loan officer. The underwriter must work independently with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities
• Reviews and evaluates information on mortgage loan documents to determine if borrower, property, and loan conditions meet investor and portfolio guidelines.

• Evaluates acceptability of loans to corporations that buy real estate loans on secondary mortgage markets.

• Verifies that mortgage loan packages are ready for final delivery to investors.

• Recommends loan approval or denial, specifying investor and institution guidelines and basis for declining applications.

• Follows up on loan conditions and clears conditions submitted by loan officers prior to funding.

• Approves or rejects loan applications, or requests additional information specific to KSFCU portfolio loans.

• Assists with loan consultants training and provides technical guidance to less-experienced personnel.

• Verifies adherence with established real estate policies and procedures.

• Communicates with management concerning review and implementation of necessary corrective actions and recommendations for further training and development of loan consultants.

• Complies with regulatory compliance and assigned training requirements, including BSA regulations.

Requirements
• Minimum 10 years of financial services experience.

• Minimum 5 years of real estate lending experience (loan officer or similar experience preferred).

• Experience with secondary market and desktop underwriting systems or equivalent education and experience.

Nice-to-haves
• Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating instructions, and procedure manuals.

• Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.

• Ability to speak effectively before groups of members or employees.
