Position Overview
The Business Development Specialist (BDS) is a merchantâcentric, growthâfocused sales role within TD Merchant Solutions, designed for professionals who thrive in a fastâpaced, opportunityârich environment.
TD Merchant Solutions is on an ambitious growth journey, focused on doubling the number of fully franchised Merchant & Business Banking clients at TD. As part of this pursuit, we are executing a refreshed business strategy that places a strong emphasis on new client acquisition, technologyâled solutions, and strategic partnershipsâmost notably, Clover.
In this role, the Business Development Specialist plays a critical part in bringing TDâs Cloverâpowered solutions to market. Acting as a trusted payments and business solutions advisor, you will help small and mediumâsized businesses modernize how they accept payments, manage operations, and grow their businesses. This role offers a unique opportunity to sell beyond traditional paymentsâengaging merchants in conversations about innovation, efficiency, and longâterm growth.
As the owner of business development activities within an assigned territory, the BDS is responsible for building a strong pipeline, achieving sales targets, and expanding TDâs presence in the SMB segment by leveraging the full TD Merchant Solutions value proposition, including Clover.

Sales & Business Development
Proven experience in business development, outbound sales, or merchant acquisition, ideally within payments, POS, financial services, or technologyâenabled solutions
Demonstrated success in prospecting, cold calling, pipeline building, and closing new business opportunities
Strong ability to uncover merchant needs and position valueâbased solutions, not just products
Payments, POS & Technology Acumen
Experience or strong interest in Point of Sale (POS), payments, or fintech solutions, including the ability to confidently discuss how technology supports business growth
Comfort selling integrated solutions (hardware, software, services, and banking partnerships) such as Clover or similar platforms
Ability to translate technology features into clear, practical business benefits for small and mediumâsized businesses
Relationship Management & Influence
Proven ability to build trusted relationships with business owners and decisionâmakers
Strong negotiation and influencing skills, with the confidence to engage merchants in strategic conversations about growth, efficiency, and customer experience
Ability to collaborate effectively with internal partners, including Regional Sales Managers and Business Banking colleagues
Execution & Autonomy
Comfortable working in a remote, territoryâbased role with a high degree of autonomy and accountability
Strong timeâmanagement, organization, and prioritization skills to manage a full sales cycle across multiple opportunities
Selfâmotivated, resilient, and resultsâdriven, with a strong work ethic and growth mindset
Tools & Communication
Experience using CRM tools, preferably Salesforce, to manage pipeline activity and forecasting
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to deliver compelling presentations to merchants, senior leaders, and business partners
Additional Requirements
Willingness to travel within the assigned territory and work flexible hours based on business needs
Previous experience in Merchant Solutions, Business Banking, Payments, or SMB sales is considered a strong asset
