Education Attorney

Remote Full-time
Company Description

Harbottle Law Group (“HLG”) is a 10-attorney law firm specializing in representing the legal needs of California's local educational agencies, school districts, charter schools, and county offices of education. We represent our public education clients throughout the state from a main office in Irvine, and a secondary office in San Jose. HLG's primary practice areas include special education, student services, insurance defense litigation for student-involved matters, and general counsel. HLG is unique among law firms that serve public education clients due to our emphasis on professional development for schools, alternative dispute resolution, and our active appellate litigation practice. Additionally, we have a cost-effective lower-billable hour model that allows our attorneys to provide excellent service to our clients while maintaining better work-life balance.

HLG is currently seeking to add a junior to mid-level Education Attorney, with a primary practice area in special education matters.

Role Description

This is a full-time role for a junior to mid-level Education Attorney. HLG will consider flex or part-time needs of an applicant. The majority of work would be remote, but the candidate should be able to travel to school or court locations as the matter requires. The candidate should be familiar with all stages of administrative litigation in special education matters before the California Office of Administrative Hearings.

The Education Attorney will be responsible for providing legal advice and assistance to various LEAs in the areas of special education, Section 504, student discipline, policies and procedures, and risk management. The Education Attorney will also negotiate and draft settlement agreements and provide representation for clients through mediation, alternative dispute resolution, and administrative hearings. The successful candidate will be able to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment, and maintain a strong understanding of the legal issues affecting educational institutions.

Qualifications
• JD from an ABA accredited law school and admission to the California Bar
• Minimum of 2 years of experience as an attorney, with experience in education law preferred
• Preference given to candidates who have experience with Office of Administrative Hearings
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex legal concepts to clients, colleagues, and families in a clear and concise manner
• Strong negotiation, drafting, and analytical skills, with the ability to provide creative solutions
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively, and manage multiple projects simultaneously
• Knowledge of federal and state laws and regulations applicable to educational institutions, including but not limited to IDEA, Section 504, ADA, and FERPA regulations
• Experience with providing legal advice to public entity clients
• Experience with alternative dispute resolution methods, including mediation and arbitration
• Commitment to staying up-to-date on changes and trends in education law, through continuing education, training, and professional development

Compensation: This position offers a competitive salary commensurate with experience, with a pay range of $105,000 - $150,000. HLG has billable hour requirements that are substantially below those required by our competitors, as well as a comprehensive benefits package, with 401(k) contributions, full health benefits for employees, and paid holidays.
