The Data Science Undergraduate Academic Advisor will support the multi-disciplinary undergraduate Data Science Program by providing academic advising, managing curriculum planning, and coordinating various departmental programs and events.ResponsibilitiesParticipating in the short- and long-term planning for the degree program and the curriculumAcademic advisingManaging petitions and enrollment requestsStudent outreachConducting degree checksCoordinating department programs and eventsProviding guidance to students, faculty, and campus partners on departmental academic regulationsEvaluating transcripts of transfer students for course equivalencies and applicability to the Data Science degree requirementsProviding advising for majors, minors, and double majorsInitiating and following-through on various forms related to academic programs: petitions, grade changes, course approvals, minors, Education Abroad etcInitiating resolution on problematic petitions and formsUpdating degree auditsWorking closely with the undergraduate colleges, Financial Aid and Scholarships Office, University Extension, International Center, Registrar's Office, Student Business Services and other academic departmentsIdentifying students experiencing academic, emotional, financial, or personal difficultiesReferring students to faculty advisors, undergraduate colleges, Counseling and Psychological Services, Office of Students with Disabilities, Career Services, Student Financial Aid, and other resources on campus as appropriateParticipating in the development, planning and implementation of student outreach and retention events with industryCreating informational materials including departmental web pages or student communicationsCoordinating Triton Day Days, New Student Orientation, and student mixersSkillsBachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / trainingKnowledge of advising and counseling techniquesProven experience in effectively counseling college student population to assist them in meeting educational, academic, and career goalsStrong writing skills to independently compose correspondence, informational material, and web page content using correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, composition, text editing, and proofreading skillsSkills in service orientation, organization, active listening, and critical thinkingDemonstrated strong organizational skillsAbility to gather and synthesize large amounts of complex data to generate reports and make recommendationsKnowledge of University-specific computer application programs and pertinent databasesDemonstrated skill in using standard and specialized office computer technology (email, database systems, spreadsheet, word processing and internet), and a commitment to regularly update and maintain technology skillsDemonstrated record management experienceProven skill in developing and maintaining accurate, organized records, files and filing systemsCompany OverviewUC San Diego Extension is an online research university for community leaders and professionals.
