Coder Abstractor (Temporary)

Main Function:
Griffin Health is seeking a detail-oriented and dedicated Coder/Abstractor to join our Medical Records team. The primary responsibility of this role is to assign accurate diagnosis and procedure codes for inpatient and outpatient hospital records. These codes are essential for research, hospital operations, and reimbursement, and must comply with all local, state, and federal regulations. This position also includes abstracting key data to support clinical and administrative functions.

Key Responsibilities:
• Assign ICD-9-CM, CPT-4, and HCPCS codes to hospital outpatient and inpatient medical records.
• Ensure coding accuracy and compliance with current regulations and guidelines.
• Abstract pertinent information from medical records into the hospital information system.
• Collaborate with clinical staff and other departments to clarify documentation when needed.
• Maintain confidentiality and security of patient health information at all times.

Qualifications:

Education:
• High School Diploma or equivalent required.
• Completion of an approved medical coding program is required.

Experience:
• Minimum of 2 years of coding experience in a hospital setting
OR
• Credentialed (RHIT, CCS, CPC-H) upon completion of an approved coding program.

Preferred Certifications:
• Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
• Certified Professional Coder – Hospital (CPC-H)

Additional Skills:
• Strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
• High level of accuracy and attention to detail.
• Proficiency in coding software and electronic health records (EHR) systems.
• Strong organizational and communication skills.
