What We Look For In a Chess Tutor
• Advanced subject mastery: deep knowledge of chess opening principles, tactical motifs (forks, pins, skewers, discovered attacks), positional strategy, endgame technique, pawn structures, piece coordination, and competitive chess rules; ability to explain opening systems, middlegame planning, and endgame theory while preparing students for scholastic tournaments and rated competitions.
• Conceptual teaching & problem‑solving: skilled at teaching tactical pattern recognition, strategic planning, and game analysis; guides students through identifying tactical opportunities, evaluating positions, developing opening repertoires, executing common endgame techniques, and analyzing their own games for improvement; emphasizes critical thinking and decision‑making skills while connecting chess to logical reasoning, patience, and problem‑solving skills applicable beyond the board.
• Curriculum awareness & adaptive instruction: familiar with chess instruction progressions and common challenges such as transitioning from tactical to positional play, calculating variations accurately, and managing tournament time pressure; adapts instruction using puzzle practice, game analysis, and progressive difficulty exercises to support students from absolute beginners to advanced tournament players seeking rating improvement.
• Effective teaching methods: ability to identify concepts students commonly struggle with, explain material using multiple approaches, and adapt instruction to meet individual learning needs and styles.
• Strong communication skills and a friendly, engaging teaching style.
• Ability to adapt to different learning styles and student needs.
