Assistant Electrical Engineer
The DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION is seeking a motivated candidate for the position of Assistant Electrical Engineer. The role involves performing responsible work in Electrical Engineering, including preparing designs and plans, evaluating contract documents, conducting field visits, and coordinating with design consultants on traffic signal and street lighting projects. Responsibilities Perform responsible work in Electrical Engineering Engage in research, investigations, studies or examinations related to the engineering functions or activities of a department or agency Prepare designs and plans using AutoCAD Evaluate contract documents and specifications, working drawings and other technical specifications and estimates of quantities Conduct field visits and complete lighting survey projects and any lighting improvement requests to ensure city standards, IESNA, and national electrical codes are met Coordinate with design consultants and review submitted plans for the development/modification of new and/or existing signalized intersections and street lighting work Coordinate electrical service, relocation, and other requests for utilities Advise and make recommendations to other city and state agencies regarding traffic signal and street lighting projects Review and approve shop drawings and catalogue cuts for construction Maintain records of drawings, plans, maps, surveys and inspections Skills A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university and one year of full-time satisfactory experience in electrical engineering work A baccalaureate degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college and a master's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university A master's degree in electrical engineering from an accredited college or university can only be used to substitute for one year of full-time satisfactory work experience in electrical engineering A degree in any other engineering area, or in any engineering technology area, is not acceptable Candidate should be detailed orientated, accurate, excellent verbal and strong writing communication skills Candidate should have the ability to work effectively with others and collaborate in a team environment Candidate should be proficient in AutoCAD and have strong computer knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint Familiarity with lighting design software such as Visual Professional, AG132 and photometric tools as well as knowledge of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA) recommendations, NEC, NESC, AASHTO and FHWA is preferable Candidate should have the ability to read and interpret contract specifications and other technical specifications Candidate must have a valid NYS Driver's License Benefits Public Service Loan Forgiveness Company Overview The U.S. Department of Transportation is a Federal organization that oversees motor vehicle and transportation system in the United States.
