Assistant Attorney General - Environmental Protection Division

About the position The Assistant Attorney General for the Environmental Protection Division will lead the prosecution of environmental crimes in Washington State. This role involves handling all phases of criminal environmental enforcement cases, collaborating with various agencies, and developing litigation strategies to address complex legal issues. The position emphasizes public service, teamwork, and a commitment to diversity and inclusion within the workplace. Responsibilities • Direct and assist in investigations and case development. • Develop creative litigation strategies to address complex legal issues. • Negotiate with defense counsel on potential plea agreements. • Draft pleadings, motions, and memoranda from initial filing through post-judgment proceedings. • Conduct all aspects of discovery. • Appear for pre-trial hearings, try cases to jury or bench, and participate in post-trial proceedings including any appeals. • Develop and foster working relationships with local, state, tribal, and federal partners. • Represent the AGO in public settings on sensitive or high-profile matters. Requirements • Two years of criminal litigation experience. • Demonstrated knowledge of the rules and procedures related to criminal law, criminal rules, rules of appellate procedure, and ethics. • Ability to foster teamwork and collaboration and promote a positive work environment. • Ability to maintain productive working relationships across the division and with stakeholders. • Strong analytical, research, and writing skills. • Excellent judgment. • Experience successfully handling multiple time-sensitive assignments. • Commitment to creating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive workforce. Nice-to-haves • Five or more years of experience in criminal prosecution or defense. • Trial experience. • Experience working with underrepresented or ethnically diverse communities or groups. • Ability to read, write, or speak a language in addition to English.
