Writer/Editor – General Plan Consultant (Independent Contractor)
Job Title: Writer/Editor – General Plan Consultant (Independent Contractor) Job Type: Part-Time, Contract (1099) Location: Remote Hourly Rate: $25-30/hour Job Description: We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Writer/Editor to support the content development and editing of a citywide general plan update. This role focuses on transforming technical inputs from planners, economists, and analysts into clear, accessible, and compelling language for public and policy audiences. You will be responsible for drafting and refining plan chapters, ensuring consistency across sections, and reviewing content for grammar, clarity, and tone. This is a proposal-based role. If selected, your resume will be included as part of a consulting team on a public sector proposal. Work will begin upon contract award. Responsibilities: • Draft and edit sections of the general plan, including land use, economic development, and transportation • Collaborate with planners and specialists to translate technical input into clear narrative • Ensure consistency in structure, terminology, and voice across all plan elements • Proofread charts, tables, and maps to ensure clarity and alignment with surrounding text • Provide copyediting support for executive summaries and public-facing documents Required Qualifications: • 3+ years of experience writing or editing public-sector, planning, or policy documents • Excellent grammar, organization, and attention to detail • Strong command of plain language writing for broad audiences • Bachelor’s degree in English, Communications, Public Administration, or related field • Familiarity with APA style, Chicago Manual of Style, or similar editing standards Preferred Qualifications: • Experience with municipal or general planning documents • Comfortable working with planners, GIS professionals, and policy teams • Familiarity with InDesign, Canva, or other layout tools (optional) • Ability to meet deadlines with minimal oversight Additional Details: • 1099 contract position • Part-time with flexible hours • Estimated duration: 12–18 months • Work is fully remote • Start date contingent on contract award Job Types: Part-time, Contract Pay: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour Work Location: Hybrid remote in West Valley City, UT 84119 Apply Job!
