Volunteer Youth Academic Tutor - Empowering Refugee Youth in New Jersey

Join the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in making a difference in the lives of newcomer refugee youth as a Volunteer Youth Academic Tutor! This is a unique opportunity to work remotely and provide individualized academic support to English language learners in Elizabeth, Jersey City, or Newark, NJ.

The IRC responds to the world's worst humanitarian crises, helping people survive and rebuild their lives. In New Jersey, we're seeking compassionate and dedicated volunteers to tutor refugee youth in their homes, improving their English language acquisition and academic skills.

Tutor Responsibilities:


Attend an onsite orientation and 3-day training at the IRC Elizabeth office, and complete associated online trainings and background check
Provide one-on-one, individualized in-home tutoring for 90 minutes, twice a week, for 8 consecutive weeks
Create a welcoming environment that fosters community and learning among program participants
Interact with diverse populations effectively and respectfully
Engage students in 30 minutes of ESL homework support/assistance and 30 minutes of ESL instruction (speaking, writing, and/or reading activities)
Communicate regularly with the Youth Program Specialist, Education Coordinator, and parents/guardians regarding student progress
Maintain accurate records and submit Tutor Logs after each session

Technologically competent (Google forms, virtual educational materials, and Google Translate)
Culturally competent (respectful of other cultures, languages, and practices)
Arabic, Dari, Spanish, Pashto, and/or Swahili speaking preferred
