Veterinary Technician (Research Animal Resources)

About the position

Research Animal Resources (RAR) is seeking a Veterinary Technician that will provide support in the clinical management of various animal research animals and will provide support in other activities related to the clinical mission of RAR. This is a hybrid position, in which the primary responsibilities will involve working with small animals (~80%) with the remainder of the role working with large animals (~20%). This particular role will have a work schedule that would require working the weekend and can either be Thursday through Monday or Friday through Tuesday.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Perform routine animal husbandry procedures.
Consult with veterinarians on clinical case management and treatment of animals.
Complete the collection, maintenance and compliance of written documentation and records.
Manage and record animal clinical cases independently
Assist veterinary, research, and Animal Resources staff as needed. This includes provisions of medical care/treatments, anesthesia, or research manipulations.
Review and communicate clinical care plan(s) with investigators
Perform animal experimental techniques, including restraint, IM, IV, IP and SQ injections, blood and tissue collection, necropsy, anesthesia and analgesia, and surgery techniques.
Assist with receiving and shipping laboratory animals.
May perform behavioral studies, and animal breeding colony management.
May perform diagnostic lab techniques including in-house parasitology and basic microscopy.
Other duties as assigned.

Specific Physical Requirements for the Job
Ability to work under environmental conditions that could require the use of safety equipment.
Specialty Occupational Health requirements up to date and complete.

In addition to the duties described above

Small animals (e.g. mice, rats, hamsters, guinea pigs, chinchillas, rabbits)
For mice and rats, work independently to triage, manage, and keep records of clinical concerns.
For all other small animal species, manage and record clinical cases under supervision from a veterinarian.
Proficient in calculating drug dosages and working with controlled substances.
Review and process small animal transfer requests.

Large animals (e.g. pigs, sheep, dogs, cats, marmosets, macaques)
Primary duties will include weekend treatments of large animals such as injections (IM, SQ, IV) and oral medications (PO).
Communicate with veterinarians on clinical case management and treatment of animals by reporting any clinical abnormalities appreciated.
Document, maintain and ensure compliance of written documentation and records, including the use of relevant software (e.g. LabKey).
Assist veterinary, research, and Animal Resources staff as needed. This includes provisions of medical care/treatments, or research manipulations.
Accurately calculate drug dosages for both oral and injectable medications.
Log and handle controlled substances appropriately.

Requirements
• High school diploma or graduation equivalent.
• One year of related experience.
• Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
• Ability to work under environmental conditions that could require the use of safety equipment.
• Specialty Occupational Health requirements up to date and complete.

Nice-to-haves
• Registered Vet Tech (RVT), AALAS Certification like ALAT.
