The Opportunity:

Unity Environmental University Career Edge seeks enthusiastic and experienced individuals to serve as Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to support the development of undergraduate courses within our Workplace Readiness curriculum. These courses are part of Unity’s innovative, workforce-aligned academic model and are delivered in five-week terms as asynchronous, online courses designed for diverse learners.

SMEs will collaborate closely with an academic dean and a learning experience designer to shape course content, learning activities, and assessments that are engaging, applied, and accessible to undergraduate learners.

Course to Be Developed

ENCJ 3040 Data and Technology for Environmental Investigations



This upper-division course explores the application of data systems and investigative technologies in environmental and wildlife crime investigations. Building on students’ prior experience with data literacy and geospatial analysis, the course emphasizes integrating ecological, digital, spatial, and administrative information into investigative workflows. Students examine open-source intelligence (OSINT), government and inter-agency databases, public records requests, and emerging technologies used to support evidence gathering and enforcement activities.

Students will:

Analyze the role of data systems, databases, and investigative technologies in environmental and wildlife crime investigations
Apply advanced techniques for gathering and verifying information through OSINT, inter-agency databases, and public records requests
Integrate multiple data streams to develop evidence-based investigative strategies
Critically evaluate the reliability, limitations, and ethical implications of digital and open-source data
Assess the utility of emerging investigative technologies and propose their application to investigative scenarios

Role Responsibilities

Advise on course scope and specific learning outcomes
Select and/or design content that supports student mastery of investigative data systems and technologies
Translate professional investigative workflows into accessible, student-facing instructional materials
Develop applied assignments involving OSINT, data integration, records research, and investigative decision-making
Collaborate with academic leadership and learning designers in an iterative development process
Ensure content reflects current technologies, legal frameworks, and professional standards
Incorporate ethical considerations and responsible data-use practices throughout the course
QualificationsRequired Qualifications

Advanced degree in Criminal Justice, Information Systems, Environmental Science, Intelligence Studies, Data Analytics, Geography, or a related field
Professional experience involving investigative data systems, intelligence gathering, compliance monitoring, enforcement, or related analytical work
Strong understanding of databases, information verification, OSINT methods, and digital investigative tools
Familiarity with legal and ethical considerations surrounding data collection and information access
Ability to explain technical and analytical concepts clearly for undergraduate learners
Strong written communication skills, including the ability to create clear, student-facing instructions
Ability to meet deadlines and work collaboratively in a remote environment
Proficiency with standard computer applications (e.g., Outlook, Word, Excel) and familiarity with modern productivity tools

Preferred Qualifications

Experience teaching, training, or mentoring adult or undergraduate learners
Background in online or distance education
Experience using OSINT methodologies, public records systems, or inter-agency information platforms
Familiarity with environmental, wildlife, natural resource, or regulatory enforcement contexts
Experience with emerging monitoring technologies such as drones, remote sensors, automated monitoring systems, or geospatial technologies
Personal commitment to sustainability, workforce development, and Unity’s environmental mission
