We are now seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Assistant, Academic Advisor to support our Academic Achievement Center (AAC) in delivering quality academic advising services. About the Academic Achievement Center (AAC) The AAC is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University, providing a range of services including Learning Assistance, Academic Advising, Student Accessibility Services, Transfer Services, and Testing Services. Our team is dedicated to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion. As a Staff Assistant, Academic Advisor, you will play a critical role in supporting our academic advising initiatives and collaborating with the Director and Academic Advising team to continually improve advising services and programming. Key Responsibilities Cultivate relationships with students to help them identify viable academic goals and degree plans through clear communication of academic policies and procedures and use of advising technologies. Utilize proactive, holistic, and relationship-based advising skills to engage with and support students. Collaborate with the Director and Academic Advising team to continually improve advising services and programming. Support all academic advising initiatives in the Academic Achievement Center to ensure the delivery of quality academic advising services in an inclusive, equity-minded manner. Exercise sound judgment and serve as a student advocate to coordinate additional services as needed. Effectively use technological solutions in the delivery of academic advising services, including degree auditing systems (DegreeWorks) and student information systems (InfoBear). Demonstrate flexibility to successfully juggle many tasks and prioritize, working in stressful situations with sensitivity to human concerns, patience, and professional integrity. Essential Qualifications To be considered for this role, you must have: A Master's degree in higher education, student personnel, counseling, or a related field. Experience and ability to work with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic backgrounds and across all identities and demographics. 1-3 years of related experience, especially in the areas of academic advising, academic support services, and/or college instruction. Excellent written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills. Knowledge of higher education principles, practices, and procedures. Ability to effectively use technological solutions in the delivery of academic advising services. Preferred Qualifications To stand out as a candidate, you should have: Experience with technology in the delivery of academic advising services, including degree auditing systems (DegreeWorks) and student information systems (InfoBear). A proven track record of working in a fast-paced environment, prioritizing tasks, and managing multiple responsibilities. Skills and Competencies To succeed in this role, you will need to possess: Strong advising skills, with the ability to cultivate relationships with students and support their academic goals. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds. The ability to exercise sound judgment and serve as a student advocate. Proficiency in using technological solutions to deliver academic advising services. Flexibility and adaptability, with the ability to work in stressful situations and prioritize tasks effectively.
