Staff Accountant

5 Star Refrigeration is looking for a Staff Accountant This position combines general accounting duties and payroll responsibilities, including support for processing payroll for salaried and hourly employees. The Staff Accountant will collaborate with the Accounting Manager, Manager of Administration, and cross-functional teams to ensure accurate financial records. Key Responsibilities Assist with preparation and recording of monthly journal entries by compiling and analyzing account information Work with the Accounting Manager to execute monthly, quarterly, and annual closings Prepare balance sheet reconciliations for assigned accounts Analyze financial statements for discrepancies and other issues to bring to management’s attention Assist with the preparation of accurate, timely financial statements in accordance with the established month-end close schedule Assist in calculation and filing of sales tax for multiple states Support internal and external audit processes Help maintain control over the fixed asset system by ensuring that all asset additions, disposals, and transfers are processed on time and are reconciled to the general ledger Review job costing analysis reports to assist in commission calculation and reviews Assist in payroll processing to ensure timely, accurate, and compliant payroll for salaried and hourly employees Perform other duties as assigned by leadership Requirements and Technical Skills Bachelor’s degree in accounting required 2+ years of relevant work experience Excellent knowledge of accounting regulations and procedures, including Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) Advanced MS Excel skills (including VLOOKUP and pivot tables) Experience with general ledger functions Ability to work with a sense of urgency and multi-task in a fast-paced environment Strong analytical abilities Soft Skills Collaboration and Teamwork: Effectively communicates and partners with cross-functional teams (e.g., Sales, Operations, Marketing) Adaptability and Flexibility: Willing to embrace new processes and pivot quickly as the company evolves Initiative and Proactiveness: Comfortable suggesting ideas for process improvements and taking ownership of tasks Curiosity and Continuous Learning: Stays updated on relevant accounting standards, technology tools, and industry best practices Strong Interpersonal Communication: Builds and maintains positive relationships; able to clearly share financial insights with stakeholders Problem-Solving Mindset: Analyzes issues, interprets data, and proposes logical solutions or process enhancements Resilience and Stress Management: Maintains professionalism and composure under tight deadlines and during high-pressure periods Preferred Qualifications Experience working in multiple ERP systems Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines consistently Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills About Smart Care Smart Care is a national repair and service provider for commercial foodservice, refrigeration, and cold storage equipment.
