Overview

The Princeton Neuroscience Institute (PNI) is one of the largest recipients of research funding on campus. The Senior Grants Manager is a key member of PNI's administrative executive team with primary oversight for grant and research-related financial activity in the Institute. The Senior Grants Manager performs pre-and post-award accounting, and financial administration for the Institute's sponsored awards, which is consistently one of the leaders in sponsored expenditures at Princeton. This position is one of two Senior Grants Managers who will lead the PNI grants staff in assisting faculty in identifying and applying for grants with about $20 million in direct cost research awards annually.



The Senior Grants Manager provides vision, oversight, and supervisory functions for the other PNI grants team members who will be direct reports. The Senior Grants Manager trains new assistant/grants managers on their pre-award and post-award responsibilities, as well as on constructing faculty grant projections. The Senior Grants Manager helps develop plans to meet research lab funding challenges, and serves as a resource for faculty, students, and staff on policy and procedural questions related to grants management and related financial controls.



This position requires strong collaboration across departments, the ability to navigate a fast-paced and deadline-driven environment, and a solid understanding of research administration practices. Requires a broad understanding of research administration and the ability to apply that knowledge to varied and complex situations.



This position can be considered for working 100% remotely.

Responsibilities

Pre-Award Activities: Prepares proposal documentation, including budget proposals in accordance with sponsor requirements. Prepare grant proposal submissions through Princeton ERA. Prepares proposal submissions to grant agencies through electronic systems or directly to the funding agency or foundation.



Post-Award Activities: Prepares projection reports and forecasts for Principal Investigators. Monitors spending to ensure that grant budgets are on track with the original proposal. Prepares revised budgets and budget justifications as required. Ensures the timely submissions of salary and wage certifications. Tracks and monitors cost sharing commitments. Other duties include cost transfers; monitoring of subcontracts and subawards; and, Labor Accounting for researcher salaries and for salary and wage (effort) certification. Reviews and verifies final reports with Sponsored Research Accounting and serves as a liaison between academic units and university research administration offices. Works closely with Sponsored Research Accounting to respond to requests from internal and external auditors.



Staff Supervision: Acts as the lead in the hiring and training of a team of grants managers. Trains grants staff and PNI-research grant project managers on all pre-award and post-award procedures. Mentor direct report(s) on professional activities and opportunities for career-growth



Collaboration, Communication, and Professional Development: This individual will serve as the central interface between principal investigators, sponsors, Princeton's Office of Research and Project Administration (ORPA) and Sponsored Research Accounting (SRA) offices. Attend all relevant training classes and stay current with changes in policies, procedures and processes pertaining to sponsored research and financial management. Communicates university and sponsored research policies and regulations to department faculty and staff. Ensures departmental compliance with applicable laws, policies and procedures. Serve on ad-hoc sponsored research committees as needed. Works with the Finance Manager, Graduate and Undergraduate Coordinators and other colleagues in the department as team spirit is highly advocated. Assist the Executive Director in projects and developing departmental grant policies and procedures as needed.

Qualifications

Essential Qualifications and Knowledge



Bachelor’s degree plus 7 years of experience with sponsored research and financial accounting in a university setting

Working knowledge of federal regulations regarding fiscal management of federal funds including Uniform Guidance.

Detail oriented, with excellent organizational, interpersonal and communication skills

Knowledge of proposal submission systems, particularly: NIH ASSIST, NSF Fastlane/Research.gov, Grants.gov, NJSAGE, Simons (Foundation) Award Manager, ProposalCentral

Ability to multi-task, work independently, meet deadlines and maintain high level of accuracy and confidentiality in a fast-paced environment

Strong budget development and financial analysis skills

Ability to creatively solve problems and formulate/implement process improvements

Ability to understand and support organizational goals, apply knowledge to achieve department goals.

Ability to function effectively in a team-based environment.

Computer skills: advanced skills in MS Excel and Adobe Pro, proficient in Word and Outlook.

Experience with Princeton University systems and software including Princeton ERA, PeopleSoft, Prime Financials, Labor Accounting and the Information Warehouse.

Familiarity with University Resources (ORPA, SRA, F&T, RIA, IACUC, LAR).

Familiarity with Princeton's administrative procedures and policies.
