Senior Copy Editor (Part-Time), Sophia Learning
About the position The Senior Copy Editor applies professional editing skills to instructional and assessment content in Sophia courses and coveys those skills in creating style guides and documentation, ensuring that the content adheres to accepted conventions of English grammar and usage and to Sophia's standards and preferred style authorities. The Senior Copy Editor is expected to exercise good judgment to help make the Sophia content clear, engaging, and meaningful. Responsibilities • Performs copyediting tasks for the Sophia Academic Team, reviewing and editing the content that is developed for proper grammar, spelling, syntax, and layout. • Monitors course ‘voice’ and tone to ensure consistency within and across courses. • Ensures consistency, flow, and language accuracy of the Sophia assessment items. • Works collaboratively with course development and maintenance teams, as well as project managers to understand needs and meet deadlines. • Builds and helps to maintain core Sophia style guide and develops a template for course-specific style guides. • Adheres to relevant guidelines where indicated (e.g., Sophia standards, APA guide, Media guidelines), helping to keep continuity across resources. • Applies Sophia’s learner-centered design, APA formatting, and HTML markup. • Leverages APA guidelines to the extent possible. • Adapts content for online delivery (e.g., links, headings, lists, brevity, paragraph size, white space, and graphics). • Aims to establish broad consistency across courses through documentation and by supporting the training of other CE staff. • Ability to stay focused and detail-oriented in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment. • Fulfill all other duties/tasks consistent with the goals of this position as determined by the supervisor. Requirements • Thorough understanding of conventions of English grammar and style. • Ability to quickly identify and repair weaknesses and errors in written text. • Ability to write clearly and accurately. • Knowledge of recognized citation standards and style guides, including the ability to apply standards and guidelines to written text. • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite. • Understanding of principles of writing for the Web and Web usability. • Assist Instructional Designers in content building related tasks. • Demonstrates a solution-focused attitude with the ability to solve problems in a collaborative manner. • 3+ years’ experience in editing, publishing, technical writing, creative writing, or journalism, preferably in an educational or Web publishing setting, required. • Editing in an online environment, required. • Bachelors or Master's degree in English, technical writing, communications, journalism, or a related field is preferred. • A combination of an AS degree and appropriate work experience may be acceptable. • Access information using a computer. • Effectively communicate, both up and down the management chain. • Effectively cope with stressful situations. • Strong mental acuity. • Regular, dependable attendance and punctuality are essential functions of this job. Nice-to-haves • Higher education experience, preferred. • Preferred ability to travel 1-2 times a year to in-person meetings.
