Job description: We are seeking a skilled Controls Engineer to join a dynamic team supporting automation efforts at Tesla’s Austin, Texas facility. In this role, you will be responsible for leading and executing automation solutions throughout the entire project lifecycle—from initial concept to final installation. This includes machine concept development, proof-of-principle validation, electrical design and layout, software design and programming, hardware and software debugging, acceptance testing, and full integration on the production floor. Per diem will be provided for candidates traveling more than 50 miles from the site.Key Responsibilities
Program and debug structured text and ladder logic, primarily using Siemens TIA Portal
Develop clean, modular, and maintainable code for automation systems
Design and implement machine control sequences for complex, multi-station equipment performing tasks such as material handling, dispensing, fastening, welding, testing, and transport
Utilize Python scripting and SQL to interface equipment with Tesla’s Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and collect production data
Develop operator-friendly interfaces using MappView/TwinCAT HMI and create SCADA dashboards with Ignition
Configure and optimize servo drives and variable frequency drives (VFDs) from vendors such as Schneider, B&R, Beckhoff, Siemens, and SEW
Design and implement safety systems in accordance with industry codes and standards to safeguard automation systems including robots, gantries, and conveyors
Manage the build and installation of electrical panels, field wiring, pneumatics, and fluid systems
Collaborate in early-stage machine development, balancing requirements such as performance specifications, layout constraints, budget, and lead time
Interface with equipment suppliers during specification, design, buyoff, and installation phases
Review electrical schematics and assist in defining control hardware architecture
Create technical documentation and flowcharts; conduct software design and code reviews
Perform verification of safety circuits, I/O systems, and industrial communications
Execute system-level testing and validation to ensure performance and quality standards are met
Support the mechanical integration and alignment of automation systems during installation
Qualifications
Minimum 1 year of experience working with Siemens PLC control systems
Proficient in Siemens PLC programming (TIA Portal)
Hands-on experience with HMI and SCADA platforms, specifically WinCC (required) and Ignition (preferred)
Strong understanding of controls hardware including sensors, remote I/O, servos, VFDs, machine vision, and barcode readers
Familiarity with industrial networking protocols (e.g., Profinet, TCP/IP, EtherCAT, Ethernet/IP)
Experience working with industrial robots such as FANUC and KUKA
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, Automation, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline—or equivalent professional experience
