Who we're looking for:

The UW Department of Laboratory Medicine & Pathology (DLMP) in Seattle, WA has a fantastic opportunity for a Research Scientist/Engineer 4 with the Davis Lab.

The Research Scientist/Engineer 4 will provide senior-level scientific leadership for research programs focused on fibroblast and myocyte biology as well as tissue and extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling in the context of cardiovascular and skeletal muscle disease. This position will work closely with investigators in a highly collaborative, multidisciplinary research environment and will play a critical role in advancing high-impact basic and translational research programs. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced scientist to contribute scientific leadership, develop independent research directions, and mentor and supervise trainees as part of a productive and innovative research team.

What you'll contribute:

Research Design, Execution, & Analysis
• Design and conduct complex in vivo and ex vivo experiments focused on fibroblast biology, ECM remodeling, and tissue mechanics using advanced mouse models.
• Apply histological, imaging, and molecular approaches including immunohistochemistry, second harmonic generation microscopy, and multi-omic analyses (e.g., single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, proteomics).
• Analyze, interpret, and integrate large and complex biological datasets.
• Develop, optimize, and implement new experimental assays and analytical methods.
• Develop new genetic and surgical animal models, maintain and manage animal colony use within the lab, and experimental planning.

Project Leadership, Writing, & Collaboration
• Lead and coordinate scientific projects, including literature review, experimental strategy, data synthesis, and milestone tracking.
• Write and contribute to scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals.
• Assist with preparation of grant proposals, progress reports, and related funding materials.
• Collaborate with faculty investigators, postdoctoral fellows, students, and research staff to advance shared scientific goals.
• Provide guidance to trainees on experimental design, data interpretation, and scientific.
• Develop independent research areas for grant applications.

High-Priority Experimental Support & Strategic Research
• Conduct rapid-turnaround experiments and analyses to support manuscript revisions, grant submissions, and high-priority research initiatives.
• Apply independent judgment to adapt methodologies and devise solutions to complex or high-risk research questions.

Administrative, Training, & Compliance Responsibilities
• Provide advanced training and mentorship in animal procedures, surgical techniques, echocardiography, and specialized laboratory assays.
• Maintain IACUC protocols and ensure compliance with NIH, federal, state, and University regulations governing animal research.
• Assist with laboratory organization and research continuity as needed.

What you'll need:
• Master's degree in a related field of Bioengineering, Pathology, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, and four years of relevant in fibroblast and muscle biology and experience with genetic and surgical animal models of cardiovascular and/or skeletal muscle disease.
• Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license, certification, and/or registration.

Additional requirements.
• Progressive research experience, including postdoctoral training, with demonstrated scientific experience.
• Extensive experience with genetic and surgical animal models of cardiovascular and/or skeletal muscle disease.
• Demonstrated expertise in fibroblast and muscle biology, extracellular matrix remodeling, and tissue remodeling.
• Experience with mouse genetics, histological techniques, and multi-omic data generation and analysis.
• Strong publication record in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to lead multiple projects, manage competing priorities, and work effectively in a collaborative team environment.
• Ability to comply with NIH, federal, state, and University regulations on the ethical use of animals in research.

Desired qualifications:
• Experience contributing to successful grant applications and funded research programs.
• Background in mechanobiology, tissue regeneration, or advanced imaging methodologies.
• Demonstrated ability to mentor trainees at multiple levels and foster a collaborative laboratory culture.
• Experience working across interdisciplinary academic or translational research teams.

Pay Range Minimum:
$99,444.00 annual

$164,328.00 annual
