Remote Volunteer Literacy Tutors Needed for Winter/Spring 2026!

Remote Full-time
READ718 offers individualized reading instruction and mentorship to low-income students in Brooklyn who need it. How the program works - A student is referred to READ 718 by a teacher or school administrator. - The student and parent/guardian agree to have the student participate in tutoring sessions at READ 718 twice per week for 1.5 hours for a minimum of 10 weeks. - The student’s literacy skills are assessed by a certified reading specialist and an instructional plan is created. Contact with the student’s teacher is made to get any relevant information about the student’s literacy needs. - The student is matched with a dedicated, trained volunteer who will work on the identified areas of weakness, as well as engage in reading for pleasure with the student. - After 10 weeks, the student’s literacy skills will again be assessed to evaluate progress and determine if ongoing instruction is necessary. , READ 718 is looking for volunteer literacy tutors for our Remote After School Program during our Fall Cycle (January 12 - June 11). Volunteers must attend an orientation session and one training session, both on the virtual conferencing app Zoom. They must also undergo a background check. READ 718 is a non-profit literacy center that provides tutoring and literacy workshops to low-income students in grades 3-8. We are looking for dedicated, reliable, caring, positive people who are committed to working with a child virtually twice a week for 20 weeks (January 12- June 11) via Zoom, excluding national holidays. Tutors will be provided with easy-to-follow lesson plans for each session, and will have access to reading specialists and literacy educators for questions and guidance. Children who are behind in reading after grade 3 and do not receive the targeted instruction that they need simply fall further and further behind. This issue has only been exacerbated by the COVID-19 crisis. READ 718 aims to provide students with high-quality, supplementary instruction to bridge the gap between students who are struggling and their grade-level peers.
