The Staff Software Engineer is a senior individual contributor responsible for designing, building, and scaling critical software systems that support Gifthealth’s core products and operations, providing technical expertise and leading complex initiatives across teams.ResponsibilitiesDesigns and implements scalable, reliable, and secure software systems for core Gifthealth platformsLeads technical architecture decisions and drive long-term platform evolutionProvides technical leadership, code reviews, and mentorship to engineers across teamsCollaborates with Product, Design, and stakeholders to translate business needs into technical solutionsIdentifies and reduces technical debt; improve system performance, observability, and reliabilityEstablishes and upholds engineering best practices, standards, and documentationSkillsBachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or related field OR equivalent professional experience8+ years of professional software engineering experienceDemonstrated experience designing and operating production-grade systems at scaleKnowledge of modern software architecture patterns (modularity, event-driven systems, APIs); Cloud-native systems (AWS, GCP, or Azure); and data modeling, distributed systems, and system reliability principlesAdvanced proficiency in at least one backend language (e.g., Ruby, Elixir, Python, Java, Go, or Node.js)Designing and reviewing complex systems and APIs skillsDebugging and resolving production issues in distributed systems skillsAbility to independently lead complex, ambiguous technical initiativesAbility to influence technical direction across teams without formal authorityAdvanced degree in Computer Science or related technical fieldExperience operating in high-growth or regulated environmentsPrior experience functioning as a staff or principal-level engineerKnowledge of healthcare, pharmacy, or regulated industry environments (HIPAA); Domain-driven design and platform engineering conceptsFrontend or mobile experience (Hotwire, React, TypeScript, etc.) skillsInfrastructure-as-code and CI/CD tooling skillsAbility to translate business strategy into scalable technical solutionsCompany OverviewGiftHealth is a healthcare tech startup that streamlines pharmacy experience with free delivery and competitive medication pricing.
