The Software Engineer II will design, build, and maintain software systems for their mission-critical platform, ensuring reliability and stability while collaborating with senior engineers and leadership. This role offers a clear growth path toward a Senior Software Engineer position as responsibilities expand over time.ResponsibilitiesDesign and implement services and features within established architectural patternsContribute to written technical designs and implementation plans, collaborating with senior engineers to ensure alignment on broader system impactReview approaches and trade-offs with the engineering team to maintain consistency, scalability, and reliability across the platformBuild software with security, privacy, and compliance considerations in mind, partnering with internal teams as neededDevelop, test, and deploy production-ready code, including building and maintaining automated tests, to balance delivery timelines with system stability, reliability, and maintainabilityApply sound technical judgment when refactoring existing systems or implementing pragmatic fixes, documenting decisions and communicating trade-offs clearlyParticipate actively in code reviews and uphold established engineering standards and best practicesProactively identify technical risks, performance bottlenecks, and system weaknesses, proposing solutions and collaborating with senior engineers on higher-impact remediation effortsParticipate in production support and incident response, contributing to investigation and resolution effortsContribute to monitoring, logging, and alerting practices, and assist with incident investigation, root cause analysis, and follow-up improvements to support system health and reliabilityCreate and maintain clear technical documentation, including implementation notes, architectural context, and code-level documentationUse written communication to keep work visible, reduce reliance on synchronous meetings, and support effective collaboration in a distributed environmentEnsure technical decisions, open questions, and current work status are accessible and understandable to other team membersPartner with Product and Operations teams to understand requirements and deliver reliable technical solutionsCollaborate effectively with distributed team members across time zones using asynchronous tools such as Slack, Jira, and shared documentationSupport continuous improvement initiatives that enhance system reliability, developer efficiency, and operational claritySkills3–5 years of professional software engineering experience in production environmentsProduction-level proficiency in at least two of the following languages or frameworks: Ruby, JavaScript / TypeScript (Node.js), Java (Spring Framework), PythonExperience designing and working with relational databases such as MySQL or PostgreSQLWorking knowledge of Redis and RabbitMQ or similar caching and messaging systemsExperience building, maintaining, or troubleshooting CI/CD pipelines, including GitHub ActionsExperience working with AWS services and cloud-based architecturesFamiliarity with Linux-based environments, including on-premise infrastructureProven ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and deliver stable solutions in a fast-paced environmentStrong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearlyExperience working in distributed or remote teams across multiple time zonesReliable high-speed internet connection suitable for full-time remote workAvailability to support occasional after-hours production issues as neededAuthorization to work in the United StatesCompany OverviewConvo Communications provides video relay services vrs technologies that enable phone conversations for the deaf and hard of hearing.
