The role involves analyzing data, developing models related to fire safety science, and ensuring data quality and compliance while collaborating with researchers and presenting findings.ResponsibilitiesIdentifies fundamental knowledge needed to enhance UL’s thought leadership and support the strategy of ULApplies intensive and diverse knowledge of engineering technology and systems engineering concepts to the specific research tasks. Exercises a high degree of judgment in formulating, evaluating, and correlating broad engineering research concepts and guiding the analysis of unique problems and developing new and improved techniques and methodsAnalyzes emergency response data to determine trends and develop solutionsExperience developing automated test datasets and repeatable frameworks, data quality checks and validation scriptsEnsure data quality, lineage, and governance compliance using enterprise catalog toolsStays ahead of changing technologies, in the field by reading journals and scientific publications, and attending academic conferencesPlan, design, and complete initial and follow-up tests as needed to validate resultsWork with students and teamsPresent research results internally or externally as neededPerform other duties as directedSkillsBachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field plus 8 or more years of directly related work experienceMaster's degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field plus 4 or more years of directly related work experiencePhD in Data Analytics, Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field or equivalent experience plus 2 or more years of directly related work experienceExperience with ETL/ELT tools and modern data pipeline architecturesExperience with data validation, cleansing, and quality assurance methodologiesExperience testing and troubleshooting data pipelines, data integrations, and data transformation processesExperience developing automated data quality checks and validation scriptsExcellent communication skills requiredDemonstrated experience with cloud-based data platforms and analytics environments (AWS, Snowflake, Dash)Ability to collaborate with peers and work directly with Research Scientists and other team members in order to complete a project from start to finishAbility to serve as lead author on reports and papersBenefitsAll employees at UL Research Institutes are eligible for bonus compensation.We offer comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance plansA generous 401k matching structure of up to 5% of eligible payWe invest an additional 4% into your retirement saving fund after your first year of continuous employmentDepending on your role, you may be able to discuss flexible working arrangements with your manager.We also provide employees with paid time off, including vacation, holiday, sick, and volunteer days.Company OverviewUL Standards & Engagement translates scientific discoveries into standards and policies for public safety.
