They are offering a fully remote legal externship for 2L or 3L law students to develop research, writing, and advocacy skills while contributing to the organization's mission of tech justice and poverty law.ResponsibilitiesResearch and draft legal memorandaDraft public education materialsDraft public records requests, review and analyze recordsReview and analyze existing and proposed AI legislation and AI policiesContribute to drafting and editing TTJ public comments for proposed regulations or legislationAssist in responding to requests for technical assistance from ground-level advocatesParticipate in training sessionsSupport organizing and campaign workCollaborate with technologist staff to evaluate AI and automated systemsSupport litigation and legal advocacySkillsA passion for social justice and equityExcitement about serving low-income and marginalized communities directly impacted by AIStrong research, writing, and analytical skillsComfort working independently and in a collaborative remote start-up environmentKnowledge of antipoverty, civil rights and/or technology justice issues is a plusAdvocacy experience involving racial justice, economic justice, disability justice, organized labor, or grassroots organizing is a plusCandidates who live in or have working experience in Arkansas or California are particularly encouraged to applyBenefitsOur legal staff will provide the necessary supervision and complete administrative requirements to be approved as a field placement for academic credit.We will also provide supporting documentation for any third-party fellowships or stipends.Hands-on experience in nonprofit policy/advocacy within the tech justice and AI landscapeSupervision from experienced attorneys, and the opportunity to work on a multidisciplinary team that includes organizers, communications professionals, and a technologistLetter of recommendation and potential references upon successful completionAccess to a private, quiet workspace appropriate for virtual meetingsWe are committed to providing reasonable accommodations to people with disabilities during the application process and after hiring.Company OverviewTechTonic Justice fights the ground-level harms that AI, algorithms, and related technologies inflict on low-income communities nationwide.
