They are seeking a Lead Underwriting Consultant to underwrite and oversee the selection of risk for large complex life applications, manage underwriting services, and develop underwriting processes to meet financial objectives.ResponsibilitiesAnalyzes qualitative and quantitative data and provides approval for risk selection and acceptance, coverage, and pricing. Analyzes quality and quantity of risks underwritten and prepares reports accordinglyEvaluate life insurance applications, including those with chronic illness riders, with a focus on both medical and financial risk assessmentAssists others with resolving complex issues while ensuring adherence to underwriting standards and objectivesParticipates in business planning to support product, program and policy developmental efforts. Participates in department initiatives; assists in recommending/ implementing changes to improve productivity, profitability, growth and qualitySelects and classifies risks according to company philosophy and standardsMay assist with training and developing underwritersManages retentionMaintains profitable mortality experienceAnalyzes and interprets medical, non-medical and financial informationMake decisions within approval limits at 100% up to $15,000,000 standard to age 90Determines appropriate requirementsReviews and provides signatures on referrals from underwritersIdentifies and provides solutions to work related problems and issuesCommunicates and collaborates with the field and home office to provide the highest quality service levels to customersMaintains positive and effective relationships with internal and external partnersParticipates in major projectsComplies with all company and site policies and proceduresRemains current in profession and industry trendsSuccessfully completes regulatory and job training requirementsPerforms other duties as assignedSkillsCollege degree required, equivalent work experience in life Underwriting may be consideredFLMI, FALU and ACS designations or current coursework toward earning certificates7-10 Years underwriting experienceHighly developed knowledge of underwriting functionGeneral awareness of current affairs, industry issues and trends, both corporate and externalSolid knowledge of insurance contract law and state legislative requirementsStrong knowledge of insurance products (plans, riders, benefits) and illustrations and how they are marketedFamiliarity with chronic illness underwriting or long-term care rider principles, including strong knowledge of morbidityStrong knowledge of reinsurance marketplace to work proactively with the field where reinsurance is an opportunityThorough understanding of automatic reinsurance agreementsHighly developed knowledge of medical science, technology and terminology and their impact on mortalityHighly developed knowledge of financial and other non-medical underwriting factorsThorough knowledge of financial and non-financial underwriting factorsThorough knowledge of product pricingStrong organizational, communication and interpersonal skillsStrong analytical skills, ability to define, research and resolve problemsExcellent knowledge of mainframe and PC environmentAbility to create and maintain customer relationshipsAbility to prioritize and work effectively under deadlines balancing published service times with an appropriate customer focusAbility to comprehend, retain and apply current technical information to daily work issuesAbility to make a positive contribution as demonstrated by learning new skills and making suggestions for process/procedure improvementAbility to work with others in a collaborative team environmentBenefitsWe’ve embraced a flexible, hybrid approach to work.
