Create new heroes in the land of Oz. The yellow brick road is broken, the heroes have vanished, and its magic waits to be reborn. Looking for a fantasy Character Artist to design four main characters for a young adult fantasy book cover set in the world of Oz. The role involves creating one young hero and three companions from sketch to final color, bringing them to life with expressive, painterly design inspired by Disney Lorcana, The Wingfeather Saga, Nicholas Kole, and fantasy illustration. The visual tone combines painterly realism with storybook warmth. The goal is to make Oz feel renewed and alive while honoring its mythic roots. Core Responsibilities • Design and illustrate four main characters (one hero and three companions) through concept sketches, pose studies, and final colored renders • Develop visual consistency, emotional clarity, and strong silhouettes for each design • Deliver final layered PSD files optimized for print and digital formats (CMYK and RGB) • Collaborate closely with the author to refine visual direction and story alignment • Ensure all designs match the emotional and visual tone of Oz Art Direction & Style Goals • Painterly lighting and color with visible texture and atmosphere • Clear, readable silhouettes at multiple scales • Expressive posture and gesture that communicate emotion • Designs that combine wonder with history, warmth with realism • Visuals that honor Oz’s legacy while creating a new mythology of courage and belief Tone & Style Keywords Painterly • Cinematic • Emotional Realism • Nostalgic Fantasy • Belief and Light Agreement Terms All commissioned artwork will be created under a Work-for-Hire Agreement.
