[Remote] Exempt Organizations Counsel, Legal

As an Exempt Organizations Counsel, you will provide legal and compliance advice for tax-exempt organizations, ensuring adherence to relevant laws while supporting programmatic strategies and operational goals.ResponsibilitiesProvide legal and compliance advice with respect to our tax-exempt organizations, which will require a strong understanding of the sections of the Internal Revenue Code, and accompanying regulations, applicable to public charities (specifically including medical research organizations), private operating and nonoperating foundations, and other tax-exempt organizationsReview, draft, and negotiate a broad range of agreements and related documents, partnering closely with program colleagues on grantmaking, impact investing, and other funding and collaboration activitiesDraft and implement clear and concise policies, practices, and other resources needed to establish and scale compliance for our tax-exempt entitiesEstablish, implement, and improve our client service-oriented approach to ongoing inquiries about tax exempt-specific legal rules and processesDevelop and deliver trainings to key stakeholders at all levels across the organizationAssist on governance and other corporate matters from time to timeEngage in other legal and compliance projects as needed, proactively contributing to a scaling team and organizationSkillsJD required and an active membership in at least one U.S. state bar, preferably California7+ years of legal experience with at least 3 years of experience handling legal issues associated with complex philanthropic organizationsAbility to analyze legal risk based on variable facts and communicate compliance considerationsDemonstrated project management ability and the desire to work on projects across diverse client groups with unique professional experiencesStrong organizational skills and attention to detailExcellent oral and written communication skills and an ability to partner effectively at all levels both internally and externally to CZIHistory of demonstrating good judgment and integrityA learning and growth mindset coupled with humility and mission- and team-oriented sensibilitiesLaw firm experience is a plusDemonstrated interest in science, artificial intelligence, and / or educationBenefitsProvides a generous employer match on employee 401(k) contributions to support planning for the future.Paid time off to volunteer at an organization of your choice.Funding for select family-forming benefits.Relocation support for employees who need assistance movingCompany OverviewChan Zuckerberg Initiative supports community-driven solutions to accelerate progress in science, education, and justice.
