[Remote] Executive Director, Clinical Development (MD)

Nektar Therapeutics is seeking an Executive Director, Clinical Development who will be responsible for directing the planning, execution, and interpretation of clinical trials across Phases I–IV. This role involves providing strategic clinical leadership and ensuring compliance with regulatory standards while advancing the company's portfolio.ResponsibilitiesOversee the development and management of Clinical Development Plans (CDPs), including timelines, budgets, and resource requirementsEnsure the development and implementation of clinical program strategy aligned with Company objectivesOversee the design of pivotal clinical studies for product approval and registrationDrive strategy and direction across major functional areas, evaluating intangible variables and influencing policyDirect the planning, execution, and interpretation of human clinical trials, Phases I–IVDefine and approve scientific methods for clinical protocols, data collection systems, and final reportsRecruit clinical investigators and negotiate study design and costsEnsure adherence to protocols and determine study completionOversee and perform medical monitoring, including adverse event reporting and safety surveillancePrepare and coordinate clinical and scientific information for FDA submissionsEnsure compliance with ICH, GCP, and applicable regulatory standards (GMP/GLP knowledge preferred)Serve as consultant or liaison with partner organizations under licensing agreementsAct as a clinical opinion leader engaging physicians and external experts at a peer levelIdentify and develop collaborations with external investigators and key opinion leadersMay create and chair the Medical Advisory Board for proprietary productsDrive development of publications arising from studies and related initiativesPartner closely with Clinical Research, Regulatory Affairs, Clinical Operations, Marketing, and Business DevelopmentProvide clinical analysis and scientific support to expand market share of Company productsGuide the development of promotional materials and the training of product representativesInteract with internal and external executive-level stakeholders, negotiating matters of strategic importanceSelect, develop, and evaluate staff to ensure efficient operationsMay lead internal staffing and performance management, including hiring, training, coaching, and performance reviewsMentor junior staff and foster scientific and professional growth across the teamSkillsMD requiredMinimum of 15 years of relevant clinical development or medical affairs experienceDemonstrated extensive experience designing clinical studiesDeep understanding of clinical product development in the pharmaceutical industry and competitive strategiesWorking knowledge of ICH and GCP required; GMP and GLP preferredStrong analytical skills, including the ability to interpret scientific research and literatureProven ability to solve complex problems with innovative solutions; strong organizational skillsExcellent written and verbal communication skills, including formal presentations to senior management and key opinion leadersSelf-starter and team player with strong interpersonal skillsProficiency in Microsoft Project, Word, Excel, Visio, and PowerPointAt least 8 years of management experience preferredGMP and GLP preferredCompany OverviewNektar Therapeutics develops therapeutics based on its advanced polymer conjugate chemistry technology platform.
