[Remote] Director of Cryogenics

They are seeking a Director of Cryogenics to lead a talented engineering team in designing and managing a complex cryogenic system that supports their superconducting electron accelerator throughout all project phases.ResponsibilitiesBuild, hire, and lead a high-performing cryogenic engineering teamMentor engineers and technicians, provide technical guidance, and foster a culture of excellence, collaboration, and continuous improvementLead the design and development of the 2 Kelvin cryogenic plant, including specifications, component selection, system integration, and technical validationManage all aspects of the project including scheduling, budgeting, resource allocation, risk management, and stakeholder communicationLead on-site activities during the Albany convergence phasesOversee installation, commissioning, and operational setup of the cryogenic system with your team, including performance verification, troubleshooting, and final validationWork closely with other teams and departments, as well as external partners and vendors, to ensure alignment and coordination throughout the project lifecycleMaintain accurate documentation of design specifications, test procedures, operational guidelines, and lessons learnedProvide regular technical and progress reports to stakeholdersSkillsBachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Cryogenic Engineering, or a related field (advanced degree preferred)Minimum 15 years of professional experience in cryogenic engineering with a strong background in the design, construction, and operation of cryogenic systemsDemonstrated leadership experience managing technical teams and complex engineering projects from conception through completionStrong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to lead, mentor, and collaborate effectively across teams and organizational levelsProficiency in CAD software (Siemens NX preferred) and other engineering tools for design and analysisKnowledge of relevant industry standards and regulations related to cryogenic systems and safety protocolsAbility to work independently, prioritize complex tasks, and manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced, dynamic environmentExperience with superconducting technology and particle accelerator systemsFamiliarity with electron accelerator component design or related scientific instrumentationExperience designing, building, or commissioning capital equipment in semiconductor or related manufacturing environmentsTrack record of successfully transitioning team members from project-based roles to ongoing operational responsibilitiesBenefitsWe provide accommodation and logistical support during convergence periods.Company OverviewxLight is building the worldโs most powerful lasers.
