[Remote] Assistant Finance Director (Insurance Accounting)

They are seeking an Assistant Finance Director to manage accounting functions related to insurance programs and ensure financial integrity while supporting organizational goals.ResponsibilitiesOversee and provide day-to-day management of the financial functions associated with the League's insurance programs and other assigned funds, ensuringEnsure strong internal controls, compliance, and financial integrity while continuously evaluating and improving processes and systemsOversee and perform complex accounting functions for insurance programs and other assigned funds, including:Reinsurance accounting, financial statement disclosures, and regulatory reportingDividend calculations and fund allocationsWorkpapers, journal entries, and financial reporting for all assigned fundsGeneral ledger activity, reconciliations, and account analysisLead all audit activities for the League's insurance programs and other assigned funds, including oversight of year-end close, work papers, SOC-1 reports, and other supporting schedules. Assigned audits will include:Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA)Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR)Department of Insurance and Financial Services (DIFS)Interpret, implement, and ensure compliance with GASB and other applicable accounting standardsPrepare and present financial statements, narratives, reports, and analyses to internal leadership and external stakeholdersPerform financial analysis to identify and address trends and abnormalitiesLeverage technology and other resources to improve efficiency, accuracy, and effectiveness of departmental operationsLead the development, preparation, and administration of assigned budgetsSupervise, mentor, and develop assigned staff, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous learningSkillsA bachelor's degree in accounting or related field is requiredFive or more years of progressively responsible accounting experience, including advanced-level workStrong knowledge of GAAP, GASB, and FASB standardsAdvanced proficiency in finance and accounting systems and Microsoft ExcelStrong analytical and problem-solving skillsStrong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to make public presentationsSuperior interpersonal skills with the ability to work and collaborate effectively with individuals at all levelsAbility to effectively lead and direct the work of othersAbility to exercise excellent judgement with a strong work ethic, while maintaining a flexible mindsetAbility to manage multiple tasks and priorities with superior organizational skills and close attention to detailResidency in Michigan or willingness to relocate is required to support the communities we serveAdditional professional or technical certifications (i.e. CPA) are preferredPrior supervisory or team leadership experience preferredExperience in insurance accounting strongly preferredBenefitsFlexible work environment, including remote work optionsFlexible time offCompetitive health insurance plansRetirement savings plans with a generous employer matchA variety of other benefit offeringsCompany OverviewMichigan Municipal League provides programs, ideas, resources, and services that inspire positive change and the betterment of communities.
