[Remote] Applied AI Engineer

Sonar is a mission-driven startup founded out of Stanford, aiming to redefine mental health support through AI-enabled, human-led chat systems. The Applied AI Engineer will be responsible for building and evaluating AI systems that enhance mental health workflows, contributing to the development of tools and frameworks that improve AI performance and support youth mental health effectively.ResponsibilitiesDesign, build, and improve agent-based AI systems for internal workflowsDevelop internal tooling and infrastructure for evaluating AI system quality and performanceBuild frameworks to benchmark models, vendors, and system configurations to inform product decisionsImprove the quality, reliability, and effectiveness of internal agents through testing, iteration, and experimentationPartner cross-functionally to translate ambiguous product and operational needs into automated processesContribute to the design of memory, feedback, and workflow systems that improve AI performance over timeContribute to our internal codebase to implement and improve AI systems and toolsSkillsStrong proficiency in Python and SQLFamiliarity with GitHub and modern software engineering workflowsExperience building projects involving agents, LLM-based systems, or related AI applicationsClear evidence of shipping and implementing technical projects, whether in industry, research, or high-quality side projectsAbility to operate effectively in ambiguous, fast-paced environmentsExperience working with conversational datasetsBachelor's or Master's degree in computer science, data science, or a related fieldExperience working with mental health and/or healthcare dataFamiliarity with LangGraph and Pydantic for multi-agent orchestrationExperience designing or running AI evaluationsContributions to open-source AI repositoriesBenefitsMeaningful equity, commensurate with experienceFully remote (US-based)Unlimited PTOHealth benefitsCompany OverviewSonar is a healthcare company focusing on the proactive identification and intervention of mental health challenges in youth.
