Recreation Leader

Positions assigned to this class assist with the planning, operation, and supervision of various recreational activities including adult and youth sports, aquatics, cultural events, outdoor activities, special events, Multi-Gen Center operations, contract classes, and senior services. Receives general instruction but applies specialized skills and training in conducting recreational activities. The following is intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks may vary over time depending on the City’s needs. Supervise and participate in the issuance, use, care, and maintenance of recreation supplies and equipment. Plan, organize, and lead a wide variety of recreational activities at schools, parks, Multi-Gen Center, and other recreational areas. Lead and supervise groups of individuals in organized play in a variety of sporting events and contests. Assist in the scheduling, operation, set-up, and daily maintenance of City facilities. Inspect recreation areas, facilities, and equipment to insure the safety of participants and spectators. Participate in the preparation of ball fields to include putting out bases, chalking lines, and operating lighting system. Perform a variety of routine clerical work including filing, billing, checking and recording information on record, receptionist, telephones, cashiering, and customer service. Supervise sports leagues through timekeeping, scorekeeping, evaluating officials, and recording league results. Communicate effectively with co-workers, parents, program participants, coaches, officials, and volunteers. Assist in the supervision of lower-level recreation staff and Volunteers; when assigned to the Multi-Gen Center assist in the operation and supervision of various recreational activities including fitness equipment, climbing wall, and pre-school aged children program activities. Provide support for access to programs, buildings, and services. Create and maintain a safe environment for staff and participants. Support the City’s policies, goals, and objectives and work with management and other staff to ethically achieve such goals and objectives; ensure compliance with safety procedures. Education and Experience Must be sixteen (16) years of age and have experience in recreation, education, fitness, sports, aquatics, or any customer service field. Knowledge City and Department procedures, policies, and guidelines; Arizona Revised Statutes. Basic principles and practices of recreation program development; rules and regulations governing various competitive athletic games. Basic first aid; procedures and protocols for injury prevention and reporting. Skills Establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with coworkers and other individuals in contact during the course of work; communicating clearly and concisely. Implementing, supervising, and evaluating a variety of recreation programs. Working with little or no supervision. Providing training and functional supervision to lower-level recreation staff and volunteers. Pre-employment Requirements Candidates who are selected for appointment may be required to be fingerprinted, if 18 or older; successfully complete a background investigation, employment verification and may be subject to a drug/alcohol test, medical, polygraph and/or psychological evaluation. Candidates who are appointed will be required to possess a valid driver’s license to operate a vehicle in Arizona, or meet the transportation needs of the position. License/Certification Must obtain basic first aid and CPR/AED or CCR/AED training within three (3) months of appointment. Physical Demands and Working Environment Work is performed in a standard indoor environment and may include working out of doors in high temperatures. May require frequent sitting and operation of a personal computer. Occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, balance, crawl, run, and lift or move up to 50 pounds. May require attending off-site and outdoor activities, and requires the operation of a vehicle. May work a flexible schedule which includes nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours.
