Role Overview

BigRio is seeking a Prompt Engineer specializing in AI Voice Agents to design and optimize conversational AI experiences for healthcare provider systems. This role will focus on building and improving AI-driven voice assistants that enhance patient communication, automate call center workflows, and improve operational efficiency for healthcare providers.

The ideal candidate will have experience working with large language models (LLMs), conversational AI platforms, and healthcare provider environments, along with a strong understanding of hospital systems, patient engagement workflows, and healthcare compliance requirements.

Key Responsibilities
• Design, test, and optimize prompts for AI-powered voice agents to improve patient experience and healthcare call center workflows.
• Develop conversational flows supporting inbound and outbound patient engagement use cases, including:
• Appointment scheduling and rescheduling
• Prescription refill requests
• Password resets and portal assistance
• Patient surveys and feedback collection
• Billing inquiries and payment assistance
• Additional patient service workflows.
• Integrate conversational AI solutions with healthcare call center platforms and telephony systems such as SIP, IVR, voice telephony platforms, and EHR/EMR systems.
• Monitor and evaluate the performance of deployed AI voice agents and prompt structures, using analytics to improve accuracy, tone, response quality, and resolution rates.
• Build reusable prompt frameworks and conversation design patterns tailored for healthcare and patient service scenarios.
• Collaborate closely with AI engineers, data scientists, software developers, and product teams to refine and improve LLM-driven conversational systems.
• Ensure all solutions adhere to healthcare privacy, security, and regulatory standards, including HIPAA compliance.
• Continuously improve AI agents to manage edge cases, escalation paths, and complex patient interactions while maintaining high-quality patient communication.

Qualifications
• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Linguistics, Data Science, or a related field (Master's preferred).
• Direct experience working with healthcare provider systems, with strong understanding of hospital operations, clinical workflows, and patient communication processes.
• 3 5+ years of experience in prompt engineering, conversational AI development, or AI-driven voice agent implementation.
• Hands-on experience with large language models (OpenAI, Anthropic, Azure OpenAI, or similar platforms).
• Experience working with NLP frameworks, conversational AI platforms, and voice AI technologies.
• Familiarity with call center and telephony technologies, including SIP, IVR, Dialogflow, Amazon Connect, Genesys, or similar platforms.
• Experience integrating AI solutions with EHR/EMR systems and healthcare applications.
• Programming experience with Python, JavaScript, or similar scripting languages, including API integrations.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and collaboration skills with the ability to work across technical and business teams.

Preferred Skills
• Experience working in hospital systems, healthcare providers, or clinical environments.
• Experience supporting children's hospitals or pediatric healthcare systems is highly preferred, including familiarity with pediatric patient engagement workflows and care delivery processes.
• Prior experience designing conversational flows for patient scheduling, insurance verification, prescription management, or clinical triage workflows.
• Knowledge of healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7, FHIR, and integrations with Epic, Cerner, or similar EHR systems.
• Experience optimizing speech recognition accuracy, natural language understanding, and conversational tone for voice AI systems.
• Exposure to contact center analytics, sentiment analysis, and AI-driven call optimization strategies.
• Demonstrated success deploying AI-powered voice agents or conversational AI systems in healthcare environments.
