Physical Engineer
NEI Electric Power Engineering is seeking a Physical Engineer in the Utility Substation group to support engineering design and analysis for Electric Utilities across the country. The role involves developing substation physical design packages, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and delivering high-quality engineering deliverables that meet project scope, schedule, and client requirements.ResponsibilitiesDevelop and support physical layout designs for transmission and distribution substationsPrepare equipment arrangements, plan & section views, grounding layouts, and conduit/cable routingSupport development of construction drawing packages (30%, 60%, 90%, and IFC milestones)Interpret vendor drawings and integrate equipment requirements into design packagesApply applicable engineering standards including IEEE, NESC, and utility-specific standardsRevise engineering drawings using tools such as AutoCAD, BlueBeam, AutoCAD Electrical, or Bentley MicroStationCoordinate with protection & controls engineers, civil engineers, designers, and project managersPerform internal design checks for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with project standardsMaintain organized engineering documentation and drawing filesSupport constructability considerations including foundations, structures, cable trenches, and equipment installationParticipate in design reviews and incorporate feedback from engineers and project teamsSupport preparation of engineering documentation and reportsAssist with resolving engineering-related design issuesMaintain familiarity with applicable engineering codes and client standardsSupport occasional field reviews and incorporate lessons learned from construction feedbackSkillsBachelor's degree with a focus in Civil / Structural or Electrical from an accredited institution1–4 years of relevant engineering or substation design experienceProficiency with AutoCAD or MicroStation, BlueBeam, and Microsoft Office SuiteStrong written and verbal communication skillsAbility to work within multidisciplinary engineering teamsApplicants must be currently authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basisFE or PE licensureBenefitsMedical, dental, and vision coverageEmployer-paid life insurance and long-term disabilityA 401(k) with employer matchingPaid time offPaid holidaysPaid parental leaveCompany OverviewNEI provides professional expertise and design engineering services for all aspects of power systems engineering.
