Outreach Biologist Assistant

Remote Full-time
Outreach Biologist Assistant The International Crane Foundation (ICF) is seeking a passionate and driven Outreach Biologist Assistant to join our team in Western or Central Indiana. This position plays a vital role in advancing ICF's mission to conserve cranes and the ecosystems, watersheds, and flyways they depend on. Focusing on areas near key crane habitats including Jasper-Pulaski and Goose Pond Fish and Wildlife Areas, the Outreach Biologist Assistant will lead community engagement efforts, build local partnerships, support volunteer coordination, and contribute to essential conservation research-specifically focused on Whooping Cranes and Sandhill Cranes. This full-time, hourly position has an ideal start date at the end of October and pays $19.50 an hour. In addition to a base hourly wage, we offer a comprehensive benefits package that includes health, dental, and vision insurance, 401(k) with employer contributions, generous paid time off , and additional perks designed to support work-life balance and well-being. About the Role This is a unique opportunity for a biologist who thrives at the intersection of science and public engagement. You will represent ICF in communities across Western Indiana, developing and delivering in-person and virtual programs for diverse audiences including hunting groups, birders, civic organizations, zoos, and landowners. You will also play a key role in raising awareness about Whooping Cranes through public speaking, naturalist programs, media interviews, and social media content. Beyond outreach, your work will support the long-term survival of these endangered birds through hands-on conservation research. This includes monitoring crane behavior and habitat use, conducting field surveys using radio telemetry, and gathering data at key sites, including areas where new solar energy developments intersect with crane habitats. You'll also assist in data entry and contribute to reports and scientific publications that inform broader conservation strategies. Collaboration is at the heart of this role. You'll work closely with ICF's Whooping Crane Project Manager and coordinate with our outreach teams in Wisconsin and Alabama. You'll also form critical relationships with landowners, volunteers, and local partners who help watch over and protect cranes in their communities. Managing and mentoring volunteers is a core part of the role, as is training them to extend the reach of ICF's educational programs. Qualifications We are looking for candidates with a bachelor's degree in biology, wildlife conservation, or a related field, who bring experience in public speaking, landowner and volunteer engagement, and field data collection. You should be comfortable using Microsoft Office tools and online platforms like Zoom and Microsoft Teams to engage remote audiences. A valid driver's license and reliable vehicle are required, and travel expenses will be reimbursed. If you're excited by the idea of combining science, education, and community engagement to protect one of North America's rarest birds, we encourage you to apply. This is more than a job-it's a chance to make a lasting impact in the conservation of iconic species and their habitats. Join us in Western Indiana and help cranes thrive into the future.
