OverviewBookNook is seeking passionate educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. BookNook Tutors are on the front lines of closing the early-learning gap for K-8 students during a key period of their educational journey. Our Online Reading Tutors work in live, synchronous online tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform and video conferencing software. This is an exciting opportunity to have a direct, positive impact on students.As we near the end of the school year, BookNook is seeking to hire tutors for programs scheduled to begin in the Fall of 2025. We will be reviewing applications on an as-needed basis leading up to and through the summer. Please note that response times will be longer than usual. We are NOT currently hiring for immediate work.Position SpecificsPosition Type: 1099-eligible independent contractorPay Rate: $20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session)Timeline: Programs begin Fall 2025Schedule: Up to 30 hours per week based on availability provided and the number of active tutoring programs. Schedules may vary based on school requests.Sessions are held only on weekdays (no weekends) and can be before school, during school, or after school.Program duration varies. Tutors are expected to commit to a full program with the same group of students throughout (duration will be known when series are offered).Learn more about what it's like to be an online tutor at BookNook here.ResponsibilitiesConduct virtual tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform—no lesson planning required!Manage student behavior and engagement throughout sessionsCreate a safe, respectful learning environmentMaintain positive relationships with studentsDocument observations for each session in the session notesRequirementsMust be at least 18 years oldMust reside in and work from the United States, with a US mailing address.Please note: BookNook is unable to engage with tutors who reside in the following states: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, as well as US territories.Knowledge of and experience with reading instruction based in the science of reading.Ability to build meaningful connections with students to create a motivating and encouraging environment.Creativity and flexibility to meet students where they are.Experience teaching/tutoring K-8 students, which may include, but is not limited to: having a current/previous teaching license, serving as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant, paraprofessional, professor, instructor, AND/OR tutoring for another tutoring company.Classroom experience preferred.Online teaching/tutoring experience preferred.Completed or enrolled in a teacher credential program preferred.Access to a computer, webcam, and reliable, high-speed internet connection with a speed of at least 10mbps.Our Hiring ProcessApply — Submit an application online and receive a decision within 1-2 business days regarding the next steps in the process.Interview — Applicants invited to our one-way interview round will be asked to submit video responses answering questions designed to help us evaluate their experience and educational knowledge. This one-way interview is intended to be completed in less than 30 minutes, similar to a face-to-face interview.Qualification Decision — After the interview round, our team will notify applicants within 5 business days of the decision to move forward with the onboarding process.Onboarding — BookNook will send instructions to begin onboarding to qualified individuals starting in August 2025. The process includes setting up your payment account, completing a fingerprint-based FBI background check, and reviewing online courses to familiarize yourself with BookNook’s processes and systems.
