New applicants should apply to one of the other open roles.BookNook is seeking passionate educators to join our tutoring community as independent contractors, working up to 30 hours per week. BookNook Tutors are on the front lines of closing the early-learning gap for K-8 students during a key period of their educational journey. Our Online Reading Tutors work in live, synchronous online tutoring sessions using the BookNook platform and video conferencing software. This is an exciting opportunity to have a direct, positive impact on students.BookNook tutors must reside in and work from the United States and have a US mailing address. We are unable to engage with tutors who reside in the following states: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, as well as US territories.Position SpecificsPosition Type: 1099-eligible independent contractorPay Rate: $20 per hour ($10 per 30-minute session)Timeline: Programming typically runs during the school year, with the busiest months from September-MaySchedule: Up to 30 hours per week based on availability provided and the number of active tutoring programs. Schedules may vary based on school requests.Sessions are held only on weekdays (no weekends) and can be before school, during school, or after school.Program duration varies. ResponsibilitiesConduct virtual tutoring sessions covering vocabulary, phonics, and other science of reading elements using the BookNook platform—no lesson planning required!Manage student behavior and engagement throughout sessionsCreate a safe, respectful learning environmentMaintain positive relationships with studentsDocument observations for each session in the session notesRequirementsMust be at least 18 years oldMust reside in and work from the United States, with a US mailing address.Please note: BookNook is unable to engage with tutors who reside in the following states: California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, and Vermont, as well as US territories.Knowledge of and experience with reading instruction based in the science of reading.Ability to build meaningful connections with students to create a motivating and encouraging environment.Creativity and flexibility to meet students where they are.Classroom experience and/or online teaching/tutoring experience in Reading/ELA is preferred; experience can include, but is not limited to:having a current/previous teaching licenseserving as a substitute teacher or teaching assistant, paraprofessional, professor, or instructorenrollment in a teacher credential or education degree programAND/OR tutoring for another tutoring company.Access to a computer (laptop or desktop), webcam, clean and distraction-free environment, and reliable, high-speed internet connection with a speed of at least 20 mbps is a necessity for the position.Our Qualification ProcessApply — Submit an application online and typically receive a decision within 5 business days regarding the next steps in the process.Interview — Applicants invited to our one-way interview round will be asked to submit video responses answering questions designed to help us evaluate their experience and educational knowledge.
