Narrative Designer (Minecraft)
We’re looking for a creative storyteller who can turn blocks and biomes into rich, immersive experiences. If you love crafting dialogue, lore, and quests that make players feel something — this is your canvas.
This position starts as an unpaid volunteer role with the potential to develop into a paid contractor position.
Tasks
Create and maintain the lore foundation of the server
Write immersive dialogue, quest texts, books, and item/tooltips that enrich player experience
Work with game designers to ensure story aligns with gameplay, locations, and reward loops
Build branching questlines and narrative structures using tools or structured documents
Develop seasonal storylines, world events, and evolving lore entries over time
Maintain internal documentation such as a living lore bible and style guide
Participate in playtests and adjust narrative elements based on pacing and player feedback
Ensure tone, language, and formatting are polished and immersive across all narrative surfaces
Support worldbuilding during map development, including naming, signage, and world detail
Requirements
Strong creative writing skills and the ability to build immersive stories, characters, and settings
Deep understanding of Minecraft: Java Edition, especially what makes in-game narratives engaging
Experience writing quest texts, item lore, codex entries, or NPC dialogue with clear structure and tone
Ability to develop large-scale story arcs as well as short-form lore for signs, books, or events
Comfortable working with structured narrative formats, flowcharts, or branching dialogues
Creative mindset with a strong sense of pacing, worldbuilding, and emotional impact
Familiarity with Minecraft UI limitations (e.g. chat length, book size, tooltip text)
Ability to match tone and style to different factions, settings, or seasonal events
Strong communication and collaboration skills to align with designers and builders
Organized approach to versioning, naming conventions, and maintaining lore consistency
Optional but valuable: experience writing for games, tabletop RPGs, or serialized fiction
Expected availability of around 10–15 hours per week
Benefits
A unique opportunity to be part of a brand-new Minecraft network from the very beginning
Creative ownership of major story arcs, characters, and in-game narrative structures
A collaborative team of builders and devs who support and value your creative work
Clear narrative briefs, feedback cycles, and structured tooling to make writing efficient
A motivated and friendly staff team that values communication, transparency, and respect
Fully remote – work from anywhere
We’re building a diverse and inclusive team culture. Regardless of background, gender identity, or orientation — whether you’re a volunteer or paid contributor — you are welcome here. Always.
