About The Position
This roleΒs primary task will be designing for AFP (automated fiber placement) machines of various space flight components. This role will also be responsible for the mechanical design of various components pertaining to all of our space flight systems. The AFP Mechanical Design Engineer will assist in day-to-day design functions, working cross functionally across the business lines and teams.
Responsibilities:
Β Design and development of mechanical components and systems for aerospace applications, including spacecraft, landers, robotic systems, and payloads, specifically for Automated Fiber Placement machines.
Β Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including systems engineering, electrical engineering, and manufacturing, to define design requirements and specifications
Β Generate 3D models, detailed drawings, and technical documentation using CAD software (Ideally Creo CAD software)
Β Perform structural analysis and simulation to evaluate the performance and integrity of mechanical designs under various operating conditions, including thermal, vibration, and load environments
Β Optimize designs for weight, strength, and manufacturability while meeting project requirements and safety standards
Β Create prototypes, R&D models, and test articles to validate design concepts and performance characteristics
Β Plan and conduct mechanical tests and evaluations, analyze test data, and make recommendations for design improvements
Β Work closely with test engineers and technicians to ensure testing objectives are met efficiently and accurately
Β Prepare technical reports, design reviews, and presentations to communicate project status, findings, and recommendations to internal stakeholders and external partners
Β Maintain accurate documentation of design changes, revisions, and design history throughout the product lifecycle.
General Requirements:
Β Must have 3+ years experience designing for AFP, or focused study on AFP
Β Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related field
Β 5+ years of experience in mechanical design engineering, preferably in the aerospace or defense industry
Β Previous experience with Creo CAD software or related tools (SolidWorks, Fusion 360)
Β Strong understanding of engineering principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes
Β Knowledge of industry standards and regulations related to aerospace design (e.g., ASME, NASA standards)
Β Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail
Β Ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
Β Strong communication and presentation skills.
