RANGE: $85,000 - $115,000

Founded in 1901, Brooklyn Law School is a distinguished, independent law school located in Brooklyn Heights, New York. The Law School is searching for a International and Foreign Law Librarian to support the instructional needs of BLS faculty, students, and other library users. The Law School’s size, vibrant employee and student population, and commitment to providing the best legal education, will offer a candidate the opportunity to develop and diversify practical skills and participate firsthand in operating a successful educational institution.

Reporting to the Associate Librarian for Public Services, the International and Foreign Law Librarian will join a library staff of ten librarians and ten paraprofessionals. BLS Library provides reference service to faculty, staff, students, and alumni six days per week, both in person and electronically.International and Foreign Law Librarian teach in the 1L legal research course as well as other formal and informal classes. In addition, the librarian in this role will teach the upper-level Foreign, Comparative, and International legal research course and may contribute to additional FCIL-related responsibilities, including research support, collection development, and outreach to faculty and student groups focused on international and comparative law. The position is designed to support both immediate curricular needs and long-term continuity in FCIL services, with flexibility to train and mentor early-career candidates or to support a seasoned FCIL professional.

Responsibilities include:

Reference Librarian
• Reference Services: Provide general reference services both in-person and virtually, including office hours and one-on-one research consultations. Assist patrons with a wide range of inquiries from basic bibliographic questions to complex legal research.
• Research: Perform extensive, in-depth research across legal, non-legal, and bibliographic domains. Utilize a variety of resources and databases to deliver accurate and comprehensive information.
• Liaison Program: Participate in the library’s liaison program, which involves consultations with faculty, law journals, and administrative departments to determine their needs. Design and implement research projects to meet these needs efficiently.
• Instruction & Programming: Participate in formal and informal legal research and library instruction programming including guest lectures, research workshops, and the equivalent of 2 credit hours of formal legal research instruction.
• Instructional Materials: Develop library and research instructional materials, such as course videos, classroom exercises, and research guides.
• Collection Development: Participate in collection development, including source selection and updating research guides.
• Committee Participation: Serve on Library and Law School committees as requested.
• Professional Development: Actively continue ongoing professional development.

Foreign, Comparative, and International Law (FCIL) Support Responsibilities
• Reference Services: Collaborate with the current Associate Librarian for International Law to support reference services, collection development, and outreach related to FCIL resources and faculty research needs.
• Instruction & Programming: Teach the upper-level FCIL legal research course, including preparing instructional materials, evaluating student work, and incorporating current developments in international legal research and practice.
• Liaison Program: Serve as a liaison to international law faculty and student groups.
• Professional Development: Stay current with developments in international legal research and instruction, and develop subject expertise through training, professional development, and mentorship as needed.
• Contribute to the continuity and long-term planning of FCIL services within the law library, with the potential to assume expanded responsibilities over time.

Required:
• M.L.S. or equivalent from an ALA accredited library school
• ABA accredited JD or equivalent foreign degree
• Experience supervising, developing and leading staff
• Working knowledge of legal materials and research strategies needed by law faculty and students
• Excellent teaching skills
• Demonstrated expertise and aptitude for learning technology related to job duties
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and OneDrive
• Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills, possession of a sound service philosophy, and demonstrated ability to successfully manage multiple projects and deadlines
• Ability to work both independently and as a team member in a fast-paced environment

Preferred:
• Experience teaching or training people to use legal research tools
• Experience working in an academic law library online legal research tools including LEXIS, Westlaw, Bloomberg Law, and other online legal resources
• Knowledge of a foreign language

Remote capabilities:
• This position is eligible for a hybrid schedule

• Some travel may be required
