The Project

Last year, we launched our Write Shop project to capture stories from individuals across the food system—from sustainable agriculture advocates to other champions of food justice in the Global South and the U.S. This project provides a platform for these individuals to share their experiences, insights, and the strategies they've used to address food justice and food sovereignty challenges.

We conducted 30 interviews with grassroots food producers across the U.S., Africa, Latin America, the Caribbean, and Asia. Now, we aim to amplify the challenges, successes, and strategies of global BIPOC voices as they seek to advance food justice in their local communities. We aim to produce 3 items from this project: 1 professional research report, 2 short-form videos, and 1 narrative- driven digital novel.

A Food First staff member will produce the research report, but we are seeking a talented freelance/independent contractor graphic artist that will produce 2 short-form videos and 1 narrative- driven digital graphic novel. We envision a novel that is at least 30 pages, with 12" by 9" inch pages, but we are open to applicant suggestions.

As the lead graphic artist for this project, you will work alongside a Food First staff member and review our 30 interview recordings. Together, you will identify common themes, points of divergence, regionally-specific issues, and superseding themes about the food justice/food sovereignty movement.

To get a sense of our envisioned narrative and illustration flow, check out our vision board: https://pin.it/33RAyygUA

Potential Project Timeline (subject to change, based on applicant input)

Ideally, project kickoff will be February 17th. By this time, the Food First staff member will have a strong outline of the professional research report. The independent contractor will review this outline and the interview recordings.

By March 15th, the Food First staff member will have mostly completed the professional research report. Using insights from the interview recordings and the report, the independent contractor and the Food First staff member will have collaboratively outlined the narratives for the short videos and the graphic novel. The independent contractor will also have started the visual outlines for both the videos and the graphic novel.

By April 15th, the independent contractor will have finished the first short-form animated video.

By May 15th, the independent contractor will have finished the second short-form animated video.

By June 15th, and building upon the written report and the videos, the narrative-driven digital graphic novel will be completed and ready to share.
