Hmong/English Focus Group Transcription Translator

Department Overview:

You will be working with researchers at the UW–Madison School of Human Ecology (SoHE), located in Nancy Nicholas Hall. SoHE focuses on preparing students for careers that improve quality of life through studies in human development, design, consumer behavior, and community action. The grant project is collaboratively administered through UW Extension’s Health & Well-Being Institute, which addresses challenges—such as food security, chronic disease prevention, mental health improvement, and access to health insurance—through research-informed programs. The program is part of the UW Extension Rural Health Connection project, which examines an Extension community health worker model in three rural Wisconsin counties and tribal nations.

Flexible between the hours of 8 am and 6 pm M-F. Student can work remotely.

Qualifications:

The candidate must be a student who is bilingual in Hmong and English. The ideal candidate is meticulous, detail oriented, and possesses strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to accurately translate Hmong into English. The candidate should be self-motivated, able to work independently, and committed to maintaining strict confidentiality of research data. Research experience is not required, though the preferred candidate can provide a previous example of Hmong-to-English translation work. Training will be provided to help the student gain experience with research protocols.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

Although research experience is not required, the preferred candidate can listen to Hmong audio recordings, use Microsoft Word to accurately transcribe them into a digital English transcript.

Position Summary/Job Duties:

Instruction will be provided to help the student gain experience with research protocols and confidentiality, and they will be expected to follow all protocols.

The candidate will receive two focus group audio files conducted in Hmong and will transcribe each file into an English transcript.

This project is expected to take up to 20 hours.

Physical Demands:

This position requires computer-based work and the ability to listen to focus group audio materials and convert them into accurate digital English documents.
