High School Tutor
The most important part of this position is the tutor’s ability to relate to his or her students. Tutors must demonstrate a strong knowledge of subject matter, along with the ability to think on their feet and quickly “learn together” with the student if presented with challenging material.
A minimum of 2+ years of experience teaching or working as a professional tutor is required.
A minimum of 1+ years of experience providing online instruction is required.
Most sessions take place during late afternoon and evening hours, so the right candidate(s) will have consistent availability during after school hours and evenings.
Candidates must have:
• Experience independently managing tutoring sessions
• An ability to efficiently manage lesson time.
• Ability to set session goals based on client’s needs and effectively achieve them within the allotted time.
• Excellent communication skills, offering “check-ins” throughout the session to confirm a student's understanding of the material, setting clear time goals, and providing session progress updates.
The right candidate(s) will be extremely comfortable and have experience with conducting online tutoring sessions, with:
• Proficient skill and experience using video conferencing platforms and virtual whiteboards.
• Access to a touch-screen device and stylus are necessary to conduct virtual lessons.
• Knowledge of and experience using various online learning platforms such as IXL, along with ability to find lesson materials for students on the web as helpful or necessary.
Necessary teaching skill-sets include:
• Friendly, upbeat, and professional demeanor with a positive outlook.
• High level of patience, understanding, and belief that every student is capable of learning the material.
• Ability to present information in different ways until a student is able to put together a solid understanding of concepts.
• Strong focus on concept-based learning.
• Use of confidence-building, affirmative dialogue with students.
• Compassion and dedication to helping your students succeed.
