Piedmont Global is looking for freelance medical and community interpreters between English and Indigenous Guatemalan languages
, for on-site/in-person consecutive interpreting in the Washington DC metro area and over-the-phone (OPI) and video remote (VRI) assignments.
English Mayan languages (including but not limited to: Mam, Kekchi/Q'eqchi, Kaqchikel, Ixil)
These are ā1099ā (Independent Contractor) positions with the interpretation to take place on-site (OSI) in the Washington, DC metro area. Some assignments might be conducted via video (VRI) or over the phone (OPI) when interpreters are not local.
Interpreter Functions
ā¢ Serve as an interpreter between a wide range of people with diverse voices, accents, speaking tempos and personalities.
ā¢ Provide parties with clear and exact interpretations of verbal communication with no additions or omissions.
ā¢ Provide interpretations of questions, answers, statements, arguments, explanations, and other forms of verbal communication.
ā¢ Render sight translations of documents and other written materials, as needed.
ā¢ Impart thought, purpose, spirit, emotions, and tone of speaker from source language into target language, and vice-versa.
ā¢ Inform relevant parties of any factor that may hinder your performance.
ā¢ Comply with applicable ethics and standards.
Requirements
ā¢ Hold a valid driverās license, or any governmentāissued valid form of identification.
ā¢ Access to a laptop or desktop computer with 4GB (RAM) memory or higher and broadband (highāspeed internet connection).
ā¢ Access to a mobile phone as a backāup device.
ā¢ Access to a headset that connects to the computer/ phone using a cable (not a wireless headset).
ā¢ A quiet workspace/home office with no distractions.
Minimum Qualifications
Community Interpreter (nonāmedical settings):
ā¢ At least two (2) years of interpreting experience, paid or as a volunteer.
ā¢ Two (2) relevant professional references that can vouch for candidateās work as an interpreter OR one (1) relevant professional reference and one (1) relevant professional letter of recommendation.
ā¢ Nativeālevel proficiency in English and the other language.
Medical Interpreter (medical settings):
ā¢ At least two (2) years of interpreting experience, paid or as a volunteer.
ā¢ Two (2) relevant professional references that can vouch for the candidateās work as an interpreter OR one (1) relevant professional reference and one (1) relevant professional letter of recommendation.
ā¢ Nativeālevel proficiency in English and another language.
ā¢ Certification as a medical interpreter from a 40āhour program or equivalent, specifically for medical interpreting (i.e., CHIT Community Healthcare Interpreter Training).
Desired but not required
ā¢ University degree in interpretation.

ā¢ Interpreters should provide proof of test results from other organizations (testing centers, other LSPs, etc.).
