Freelance ASL Interpreter (In-Person & VRI) – Independent Contractor
Job Summary
Rooted Connections is a Deaf and queer women-owned interpreting agency based in Austin, Texas, committed to accessible, equitable, and community-centered communication.
We are seeking passionate and skilled Freelance ASL Interpreters and Deaf Interpreters (DI) to join our growing team. As an independent contractor, you will provide high-quality interpretation services in both in-person and virtual (VRI)settings across a variety of environments.
This is a great opportunity for interpreters who value community impact, collaboration, and accountability, and who are excited to grow with a rapidly expanding agency.
Responsibilities
• Provide accurate, culturally appropriate interpretation between ASL and English
• Facilitate effective communication in settings such as community events, legal, medical, educational, and corporate environments
• Adapt interpretation style to meet the linguistic and cultural needs of Deaf, DeafBlind, and hearing consumers
• Maintain confidentiality and adhere to RID Code of Professional Conduct
• Prepare for assignments by reviewing relevant materials and terminology
• Collaborate with clients, team members, and coordinators to ensure smooth communication access
• Complete assignment documentation and provide feedback when needed
Qualifications
• Fluency in ASL and English required
• Certification preferred (RID, BEI, or equivalent), but not required for all roles
• Experience in interpreting across diverse settings strongly preferred
• Strong understanding of Deaf culture and community-centered practices
• Ability to work independently with professionalism and reliability
• VRI capability (stable internet, appropriate setup) for remote interpreters
Preferred Qualifications
• Advanced or Master level certification
• Experience in legal, medical, or platform interpreting
• Trilingual interpreters encouraged to apply
• Deaf Interpreters (DI) strongly encouraged to apply
